We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alejandra Escalante a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alejandra , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
I’ve been a photographer for 10 years now, and I’m still happy with my decision to go out on my own. The truth is, the work is always changing—and that’s part of what makes it so interesting. I’ll never forget the first time I had to figure out how to make my own website, or how hard it was to get clients to pay me in full (and on time).
I love my job as a photographer. I love it because I get to be creative, and I love the idea that my work can make people feel something—and not just any feeling, but a feeling they want to share with others. It’s like magic, when you capture the perfect moment that makes someone’s day a little bit brighter.
But there are definitely struggles that come with being your own boss. You have to be prepared for the fact that you will never truly get ahead of everything—you’ll always have more work than time, and no matter how much work you get done there will be more waiting in line for its turn. And that’s stressful.
It’s hard not to think about what it would be like if I had just stayed and followed my corporate career in marketing. It would be nice not to have the pressure of making sure that every picture is perfect, or that every client is happy with my work. But then again—if I had stayed in my old job, would I have ever gotten started on this journey?
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started my journey as a family photographer and pivoted towards branding photography. I got my degree as a profesional photographer while I was 6 months pregnant, as soon as my first child was born I would pass my day photographing her every move. I loved the idea of being able to document the milestones of her life in pictures. I thought that this would be such an amazing service for other moms who wanted to have beautiful pictures of their kids .I loved photographing families. and watching their relationships and personalities unfold in front of my camera
So why did I decide to change from being a family photographer? Well… because it wasn’t enough!
I have always been fascinated with branding, especially personal branding, so after reading lots of books on the subject, watching videos and attending conferences on this topic, I decided to start offering branding services alongside my family photography business.
Nowadays, as an entrepreneur myself, I know how important it is to have a strong personal brand identity if you want to be successful in your career or business.
As a personal brand photographer, I help clients create a more polished and professional image. I also help them create their brand identity, which is the most important thing that sets them apart from their competitors.
I’m proud of the work I do, and I want to make sure that my clients are happy with their images. There’s nothing more satisfying than hearing that my client loves their photos.
I always try to capture the essence of who they are and what makes them unique. As a personal brand photographer, I want to show off their personality through my creative vision and style. My goal is to show who they are and how they want others to see them. My main objective is to create beautiful images that reflect exactly what their brand stands for.
It’s important that my potential clients understand this process takes time and patience, but it’s worth it in the end!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I get most of my new clients from word-of-mouth, which is great because it’s proof that my work has had a positive impact on others.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I’m always sending out newsletters, sharing images on social media, and connecting with my clients on a regular basis. I also try to create some type of value for them outside of the actual photo shoot, so that they feel like they’re investing in more than just getting pictures taken.
