We recently connected with Alejandra Enciso-Dardashti and have shared our conversation below.
Alejandra , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
Absolutely. Standing up for yourself and being honest is still something that even though it is getting better, it is still frowned upon and when being this way, I have been considered “difficult to work with” which has nothing to do with my capability and ability as a professional.
Alejandra , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Sure! I am from Tijuana and have been crossing the border to San Diego all my life. Communications is what I majored in and it has always been my passion. Enciso Consulting is my boutique firm dedicated to binational communications where we bridge the gap through translations in the performing arts. We specialize in promoting theatre, dance, music and fine arts through press release efforts and marketing strategies.
What sets us apart from others is our expertise in target audiences on both sides of the border, always leaving room for learning and adapting.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Give your local artist, local theatre company, orchestra, symphony, etc a chance. There needs to be a balance in life and these options bring a good one to the mix of life. Theatre companies also offer outreach and engagement opportunities behind the scenes so more people can learn about the craft and see how it all comes together. If that is still something that does not feel like it is for you, donate whatever you are able. Donations are tax deductible and they make a difference.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
The journey of a creative might not resemble a standard 9 to 5 job, but it does involve people who also need to earn a living to pay for their rent, mortgage, health and overall life expenses. This is a job too that is part of a career path AND contributes to the economy. Yes, there is fun involved like with many other things but we do not do it for that, or for “hobby”. It is as serious and with its struggles and stresses like any other job. If more people understand that, I believe the flow would run smoother and more people would get involved.
