We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alejandra Bustos a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alejandra , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Writing music has transferred over from writing poetry for over 20 years. I love to write period. I started early on in childhood writing in diaries almost daily then learning about poetry and loving to rhyme words. Loving to write is the most essential but when I learned to love to read, it took me to another level in writing because of the expansion of my vocabulary. I think the main obstacle is always oneself. Procrastination, fear, and insecurity to believe that what I do is good enough to share with the world and perform on a stage. That is another part that is so important to put the work, into practice, and build the discipline to always work hard and beyond to always be ready.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started making music a long time ago when YouTube was not around nor was any self-distribution for an artist. Back then it was necessary to have a record label contract to be a musician. I made about 10 songs back then had a few performances and had the support of the public but I knew there was so much artist development I needed it in the craft of writing itself and I sought it but didn’t find it to the level I wanted it. I left music alone at that time. I then started getting offered to make music about 4 years ago. I thought I did not want to pursue that any longer. I kept rejecting the opportunity until I finally said yes. Since, I’ve had the opportunity to learn, grow, and do so much more beyond my imagination. I now make music from scratch creating the entire beat, writing the entire song, recording myself in my own home studio, and now taking the sound engineering role by mixing the song. It is incredible the journey that I have been on and know that I am exactly where I am supposed to be at. As a woman in an industry where men dominate it is a privilege to know the industry and the roles behind the artist and be able to perform them myself. I have a bigger vision and do not mind being in the back end of music instead of a stage. I want to have a beautiful and high-end studio one day. Knowing how to work every counsel and apparatus there. producing and teaching women that are willing to learn, all that I know and just make incredible, empowering, good music.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Coming into this year 2024 it was already February and I had not made one song in the new studio I had in my living room just sitting there. This particular morning I was heading over to grab a pillow I used to kneel and pray when I heard “MUSIC”. I ignored it and got on my knees to pray. After being in the presence of God I got up and sat on my bed and started telling God all the reasons why I could not make music. I said, “I have nothing to write about, I’m not inspired, I have no motivation… etc” But still, I obeyed and headed to my little studio. I began and made a song almost effortless, from the heart. I had such adrenaline and was ready to make another song that I gave myself the challenge to make 30 songs in 30 days. I did not know how this would happen but God walked and talked me through it saying, “Trust the process.” I made all those songs. Each one is unique and different but represents my life and my stories. God demonstrated to be faithful because even though I did not feel like it, I obeyed what He said to me. God is incredible and wants to do incredible things through us but we need to invite Him in our hearts, believe, and obey His word.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is to get to create with The Creator; My Father, Jesus, and The Holy Spirit. I have such a deep relationship with them that I do everything with them. I give God all The Glory for all the music He has created through me. I know it is Him because I’ve never taken classes to make music, use the software, and make beats. He keeps putting the right people in front of me to guide me with the minimum so I can continue doing the rest with Him and because of Him. I have tried quitting this music thing but He won’t let me and keeps just helping me grow so much in it. I am grateful and will continue to do what I have to do until He tells me otherwise. The other best part is listening to the finished product in my truck with Him as we bump it and sing a long to our music. It is magic and such a beautiful feeling in the heart. A glorious joy like my salvation.
