We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alecs Simone a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alecs, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I moved to London in September 2022. I knew no one, had no job or visa. I left everything I had in Italy, friends, family, career and contacts in the performing world. I just felt that wasn’t the right place for me and felt a connection with London. It seemed to me like a land of opportunity, with big productions, where if you’re good and have the talent you will find your way. The day I left Italy I was scared. Never felt like that. I was afraid that if I looked back for even just a second I wouldn’t leave. So I didn’t look back.
The first days were really weird. I felt completely alone, with a whole new life to begin and build. I didn’t know how to deal with bureaucracy, right to work or any details that you don’t know until you face them.
Right now I’m working in a venue where, while I’m putting all my efforts into being cast in a movie or theatre production, I get to know many people and perform in front of them.
I’m still struggling with my visa to be accepted and fighting loneliness sometimes, but this risk I took, was and will be the best risk I have ever taken. Regardless of how it will end up to be.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m an actor and a singer-songwriter. My mission as a performer is to be able to move people and communicate with them through emotions. I want to bring to life stories with which men and women can identify with. Be an inspiration for all those young boys and girls who have a dream too big for where they come from or the people surrounding them and inspire them to never give up, because a difficult story will always be a great story to tell. I want to show the world that if you believe in yourself, work hard, have talent and are positive you can reach anything, uncompromising or without letting other people be in charge of your dream and career.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
While I was in Italy I’ve been asked and put in the position of being promising of fame in return for sexual acts. Lots of people, especially men, promised me that they would have built my career and made me work in show business if I’d been willing to sleep with them or do whatever they wanted. I never settle for this kind of arrangement and I hope that always more and more people realize how sick this is. No one deserves to be so powerless and you mustn’t give anyone that kind of power over you. I am sure that my reward eventually will be even better because I’m fighting with my strengths.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I used to think that you just needed to be good and the best one to get an acting job. I had to unlearn this quickly. My job is mostly a continuous number of “no” and I had to learn that these nos weren’t because I’m not good enough, but just because the role is not 100% right for me in the director’s view.
