We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alecia Brown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alecia below.
Alecia , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
I’m really proud to say that at Black Lavender Co., we hand pour each and every one of our soy candles utilizing only clean, top-shelf ingredients to ensure our products are clean. Using our own proprietary blend of fragrances, we’ve created a lineup of candles that in my view provide a little something for everyone. These aren’t your big box store, paraffin-filled coffee table tchotchke, we’re creating scents that envelop your home. Scents that welcome you, that calm you, scents that set a tone and as I like to say, “create a sense of warmth that beckons you home.”

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Before moving to the US at age nine, I grew up in a small town in Jamaica where both of my parents were entrepreneurs, self-starters and frequent problem solvers. I like to think that I apply the example that they continue to set in both personal and professional endeavors. Aside from my parents, gardening has been a huge component of my life and frequent source of inspiration. The deeper I’ve gone into the world of growing herbs, vegetables, and wildflowers, the more the notion that “nothing beats homemade and home-grown” really started to permeate into other aspects of daily life, like candles for example. I’ve always liked burning candles but routinely came away from burning some of the usual big-box store, paraffin-laden examples feeling like they burned entirely too fast and frequently had an artificial quality to their smell. Surely I could make my own that were of substantially higher quality. What started as a hobby morphed into a business opportunity; I wanted other people to enjoy the clean and luxurious products I make and from there Black Lavender Co. was born. The same story goes for our soon-to-be released room and linen sprays. I made my own variety and the results were so captivating that I just had to add them to our collection!

How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
We sell directly on our website, www.blacklavenderco.com, in order to keep our prices as competitive as possible. I like to be directly connected to my customers, no need for a middle man.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
We’re continuing to get good traction from the website but word of mouth remains the biggest driver of new business. Existing customers recommending Black Lavender Co. products to their friends and family is the greatest compliment I could ever hope for. We recently fulfilled a large, custom order for our first wedding and bridal shower which was a huge honor and a ton of fun to execute. It’s an enormous privilege to be part of such special moments!
