We were lucky to catch up with Alecia Beckford-Stewart recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alecia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How’s you first get into your field – what was your first job in this field?
I am extremely fortunate to say that my first job in the chiropractic field is still my current place of employment. As a Canadian student at an American school I had the intention and motivation to find myself an opportunity of staying in the state of California. I knew that the chiropractic field is saturated in so many different cities, so it was amazing to find a practice to do my internship at that actually had the capacity and provided me the opportunity to stay. I’m able to help people in a proactive way. Focus on Injury prevention not just pain management. I’m also able to pay it forward. The guidance, care and honestly joy that I was able to receive from other Sports Chiropractors that were in my life along my athletic journey.
My goals and aspirations at the time of graduation was to be able to find a position that wanted to teach. To find an office that had a caring, nurturing environment and had patients who are movement minded- I’m still excited about being there and keeping folks on a path to pain free movement.
Alecia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Dr. Alecia Beckford-Stewart. I am a Sports Chiropractor as well as a Strength and Conditioning specialist with a keen focus on injury prevention. I currently practice out of a clinic in Beverly Hills, where we predominantly focus on myofascial manual therapy and movement. We combine joint manipulation, fascial and muscle release, exercise therapy, as well as having customized curated plans that may involve nutritional supplements. Getting patients out of pain as quickly as possible, and back to training and doing things that they love. Consistently implementing teaching methods and helping individuals so that they can help themselves in the future.
I recently launched an injury prevention program called The Foundation. The aim and focus is to implement injury prevention strategies with sports teams anywhere from high school age to elite level. It is geared towards doing baseline functional testing so that if injury does occur, we’re able to look at the baseline mobility, flexibility, ranges of motion and psychological readiness to ensure athletes are returning better than they were before. It’s all about reducing risk and increasing performance.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Service mindset. Focusing on a service based mentality has been vital for success in the field. There will be weeks when your schedule ebbs and flows as patients get better, as scheduling conflicts arise and as life happens. Marketing your skills and knowing that my knowledge and training will help just one person—I feel that is success.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Recently Los Angeles experienced devastation and loss with the Urban Wildfires. This created a significant mental shift to what is truly important, needs vs wants and how can I serve my community and grow. This is when I put some of the brainstorming ideas into action and launched the Injury Prevention Program. I initially delayed the project feeling unsure about how I would implement it, how could I impact athletes and the doubts would create analysis paralysis.
After devastation and with time there is always a growth phase and light at the end of the tunnel. This event made me consider how much I desire to serve and desire to share proactive tactics for movement minded people and athletes looking to level up.
