We were lucky to catch up with Alec Messer recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Alec, thanks for joining us today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?

Artists often face the significant challenge of a lack of belief from others in their creative pursuits. No individuals or peers will take the time out of there day to give you a chance. This happens what is seemingly a VERY LONG TIME. However, there comes a turning point when everything changes. Suddenly, a wave of overwhelming support and dedicated individuals emerges, willing to go to great lengths to assist and promote an artist’s endeavors in any way possible.

My mother is the only one who supported me from day one, and I firmly believe that without her, I would have given up by now. I am trying to get the point across to believe in ones passions or dreams, no matter how silly they may seem to you. Art and music is mostly subjective, so don’t be surprised when someone does not like your art.

If you are out there diligently pursuing your dream, despite feeling like you lack the support and belief of others, I encourage you to persevere. Keep pushing forward, for there will come a day when your diligent efforts yield the desired outcomes, and you will look back without a hint of regret for choosing the path of hard work over the easier alternatives.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Allow me to begin by introducing myself as a “Bass Music Producer.” Rather than confining myself to a specific genre like “Dubstep,” “Trap,” or “Future Bass,” I embrace the broader umbrella of “Bass” music production. This approach liberates me from the constraints of a single genre, granting me the creative freedom to explore various styles within the realm of bass music.

My journey into the music industry commenced when I attended the Las Vegas music festival, “EDC,” in May 2019. It was an extraordinary event where I forged deep connections with individuals I had never met before. The music and the vibrant energy I encountered were unparalleled, surpassing any previous experiences. From that moment forward, I wholeheartedly dedicated my life to the pursuit of becoming a music producer.

During my time at EDC, I learned a profound principle known as PLUR, which encapsulates “Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect.” This ethos serves as the foundation for ravers and creates an environment where festivals become safe spaces for self-expression. The significance of PLUR resonated deeply with me, and I am committed to perpetuating this transformative energy through my music, interactions, and live performances.

In my personal observation, it appears that a significant portion of my generation, particularly those who attend events like these, have somehow lost touch with themselves. The energy that once characterized such gatherings seems to have evolved, and it is my aspiration to ignite a transformative wildfire of energy akin to those past times. Hence, name “Mr. WildFire.” I take on a multitude of responsibilities, ranging from designing merchandise and creating visuals to managing social media, crafting DJ sets, producing artwork, and much more. Each day, I invest a tremendous amount of effort with the genuine intention of making a meaningful impact. I have amassed and released an extensive repertoire of music, surpassing the output of many other artists. Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?

I have encountered numerous setbacks throughout my journey, each test of resilience pushing me further. My TikTok account, boasting over 8,000 followers, was unjustly banned, and shortly after, my Instagram, which had surpassed 9,000 followers, fell victim to a hacking incident, resulting in its deletion. My Twitter and Facebook were hacked as well but I managed to recover my Facebook page. While attending a festival, my phone was compromised, leading to the theft of $6,000 worth of cryptocurrency—an unfortunate discovery I made only the following day. Approximately two years ago, my car was wrecked by a driver who ran a red light. Despite successfully suing the responsible party for $9,000, he has since evaded payment, leaving me in a position where I had to return to my mother’s home due to financial and relationship challenges.

I ventured into the realm of event organization, collaborating with an individual who ultimately betrayed a significant circle of friends and made false accusations of sexual assault against me when things didn’t align with her expectations. I have released with a record label with over a million followers stating that they “don’t do contracts” and then after reaching 100,000 streams they turned around stating they get 80% royalty or they take the song down. Another label with over a million followers released the wrong version of my track and haven’t updated it a year later after countless attempts to contact them. Throughout my journey, I have endured countless instances of infidelity, abandonment, and betrayal. Furthermore, I have faced the challenge of having one overly religious parent and another struggling with alcoholism and addiction. These experiences have shaped me and strengthened my resolve to overcome adversity.

At 27 years old, I currently reside with my mother, and I choose to openly share my vulnerabilities because I believe in the importance of transparency among individuals. Despite the challenges I have faced, I persistently devote myself to pursuing my passion in various ways. Whether it involves marketing, video production, music creation, or any other avenue, I relentlessly push forward. Despite the setbacks I have encountered, my unwavering passion serves as an unstoppable force. When harnessed effectively, passion becomes an energy source that propels one forward indefinitely.

Although it may appear that I currently lack a substantial following on platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok, I am determined to rebuild my presence as I have done repeatedly in the past. When you possess a true passion, external circumstances or setbacks cannot hinder your unwavering dedication to pursuing your dreams. Music is an integral part of my identity, and I am resolute in my commitment to creating music. No matter the challenges I face, my passion for music will never waver, and I will continue to create and share my art with the world.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?

I firmly believe that every individual possesses a creative capacity within them. In a world where artificial intelligence continues to advance, those who do not embrace their innate creativity may eventually find themselves replaced by technology. Humans are inherently wired to create, and for me, the act of creation brings a profound sense of fulfillment that cannot be replicated elsewhere. While I acknowledge that not everyone may excel in making music, painting, or any specific pursuit, I do believe that there is something out there for everyone—a unique avenue through which they can express their creativity.

As for the question of whether everyone can find their passion, I must admit that I am unsure. Discovering one’s true passion requires a deep exploration of personal interests and a willingness to transform something they love into a burning passion. It is a journey of self-discovery that may not be attainable for everyone, but for those who do find their passion, the rewards are immeasurable. And for this reason alone, it’s at least worth giving it a try.
