We recently connected with Ale Rubiera and have shared our conversation below.
Ale, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
Since I was a kid, my parents always allowed me to explore art. I used to draw and paint, listen to music, play the drums, and do still photography.
I began my journey when I was a little child with the help of an architect father and a creative mother with a great taste in interior and costume design. I spent a lot of my childhood going to see his architectural creations. His characteristic style is usually skylights, and I loved sitting underneath one and gazing up at the sky while amazed at the light casting pretty shadows on the ground. I realized then that I love lighting, shadows, and all the patterns it produces. I can’t help but see its beauty wherever I go. This is one of the reasons I wanted to pursue a career in cinematography, to be able to express myself, work with light, and team up with other creatives to make stories that have meaning for humanity.
Ale, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into film industry starting my career path after I earned my Communication bachelor’s degree, when I started working as a freelancer with several production companies in Mexico City. I have been a freelance still photographer for NBC Universal since 2015 for the Telemundo International produced shows. I learned what a cinematographer did while working nearby for Telemundo, and I knew I had to try it out myself. A new universe of camera and lighting became available to me when I began working as a camera assistant for a cinematographer in Mexico. I was eager to enter this new world. After three years of working as a still photographer, videographer, and assistant camera, I knew without a doubt that I wanted to be a cinematographer. I also knew that I needed to keep preparing if I wanted to succeed in the film industry, which is why I moved to New York City and later to Los Angeles to pursue my MFA in Cinematography at the New York Film Academy.
As a cinematographer I being shooting music videos, documentaries, and several short films that had been screened in divers film festivals around the world as, Atlanta Shortsfest, Portland Comedy Film Festival, Jaipur International Film Festival, Vancouver Independent Film Festival, Prague Independent Film Festival, Katra Film Series, Oaxaca FilmFest, Official Latino Film and Arts Festival, Hollywood International Golden Age Festival, Los Angeles Comedy Festival, LA Femme International Film Festival, Lady Filmmakers Festival, NewFilmmakers NY, New York Cinematography AWARDS (NYCA), among others.
In 2023, I was selected into The Academy of Motion Pictures Gold Rising Production Track in Cinematography.
I can say that what sets me apart from others as a cinematographer is being a good leader and always protect my crew. I am good at communicating, listening and expressing my ideas, and really care a lot about me and my team working in a respectful way with everyone on set.
I am really passionate about my job, and that allows me to always give my best. I like to challenge myself in every project, researching and bringing ideas that can strengthen the director’s vision in every frame.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My main goal as a cinematographer is to shoot meaningful stories that can help our society to start conversations about all the frightening problems we are facing nowadays.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to explore and being in touch with my feelings in order to use those emotions to translate it into stories that might be helpful for someone out there.
