We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Albert Gonzales. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Albert below.
Albert , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
With no training or education in art I quit my job in 2014, and was determined to achieve the goal of becoming a full time professional artist. Every dollar I made from that point on was dependent on sales I made of my artwork. I made some very drastic sacrifices at that point to keep taking babysteps forward to being this full time artist that I wanted to become. At one point for a short amount of time I was homeless and couch suffering just to maintain the ability to sell art on street corners everyday. But that was the risk I was willing to take because I believed in myself that much.
Albert , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Albert Gonzales, a dynamic post-contemporary artist from the lively art scene of San Antonio, Texas, draws inspiration from a diverse array of influential artists. His creative journey is a captivating fusion of post-WWII visionaries like Jackson Pollock, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, as well as the timeless genius of Henri Matisse and Vincent van Gogh. This unique blend of influences is the foundation upon which Gonzales builds his artistic legacy.
Gonzales’s canvas knows no boundaries, effortlessly transitioning from abstract musings to the tranquil world of still life. Every stroke of his brush is a fearless exploration of bold color palettes, resulting in the creation of artworks that exude exuberance, offering viewers a journey into realms of fun and unpredictability. As both the creator and a compelling commentator on his own artistic narrative, Gonzales’s charismatic showmanship ignites the flames of passion that drive his creative spirit.
Albert Gonzales’s accolades and contributions to the art world are substantial. He has held a solo exhibition titled “Step Inside My Mind,” participated in group exhibitions, and collaborated with renowned artists for city-wide art projects. With over a hundred paintings sold in a single year, his artistry has earned a place of honor in the UTSA Art Collection, while his philanthropic spirit is evident through generous contributions to various charitable events. Gonzales’s exquisitely minimal abstract flower paintings make him a significant artist, bridging the past and future, and cementing his place in the contemporary art landscape.
Have you ever had to pivot?
With no schooling in art, in October 2014 I decided to quit my job to pursue the dream of becoming a full time professional artist. I was already living paycheck to paycheck so that put me in an even tougher starting position and that forced me to make even tougher sacrifices. In the end, I had a goal that I was determined to achieve and thankfully I was able to stick with it.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being able to connect with soo many different types of people through my art always makes me really happy. Along with building strong relationships with my collectors it’s always fun being able to run ideas by people who aren’t “proclaimed artists”, but have a huge appreciation for what me and other artists are creating.
