We recently connected with Alba Cordero and have shared our conversation below.
Alba , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
According to my grandma, when I was 4 years old she knew I was enjoying being around music. I would sing around the house and she gave me a toy guitar for Christmas.
I also don’t remember having a childhood where I would go outside all the time; If I wasn’t with my cousins, my mom would be very particular about who I would hang out with while she was at work. My mom and Dad would work a lot and I would stay home watching TV for hours, specially channels like BET, MTV , TeleHit and Htv. All of these are music Channels where my taste for music grew and without noticing much, learned english as second language.
In my teenage years me and my friends formed a group where we would sing covers at bars from our favorite bands, specially from Paramore.
Then it was time to go to college, we stopped the band and started growing and living separate lives. I fell in love with acting after experiencing the theater group, which payed 70% of my tuition after being considered one of the good ones, and we would represent our school. I thought It was my path, and after graduating, got accepted at Stella Adler, a school of acting in New York.
Besides all of these things happening and living in the Big Apple, music was always in the back of my head. And because of that, I finally decided to act on it and give it at try as soon as I graduated acting school in 2019.
Then covid came, I had too much time in my hands and thats when I started writing my own lyrics, got a cheap microphone to record and sang on beats my friends would send me.
I decided to release my first single 2021 as AM Goldn. The acceptance was quick, started making friends in the business and started performing in the East Coast and now Los Angeles where I live and continue to create and pursue my dreams.
My songs play on the radio in the Dominican Republic and I also been noticed by prominent music artists like Ne-Yo and Vice Staples in the United States.
I knew I wanted to take this seriously after releasing my first song. I fell in love with the process: going to a recording studio, caring about details, writing and performing. Dreaming about music and being on stages day and night. I knew this is what I wanted to do because there’s nothing else that makes me happier than this. You just feel it, you feel a burning desire in your heart… if that makes sense…
Music is home.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My artist name is AM GOLDN, my music is considered as alternative with some notes of jazz and pop.
I got into the industry when I asked a friend who’s also an artist, who could help me record and mix my music, He introduced me to an amazing engineer and that engineer had other friends at the studio that would play instruments and from there the snowball kept rolling: formed a band, my music releases had acceptance and social media was a great tool to start getting noticed from peers and other kinds of media like magazines, blogs and radio.
I feel like making genuine music and connections, participating in events and shaking hands is what is got me involved more and more into the music industry. Also writing emails, asking, knocking doors. This is a process where I understood I had to leave being shy on the side and be fearless, go for what I want.
I think what makes me unique is the honesty in my music and my style. People seem to connect with the melodies and lyrics. I also tend to write in Spanglish which, for me is really fun.
I think I provide timeless music. Music where people can say: “oh, im not the only one experiencing this”. And those opinions came to my ear as I kept releasing songs. My heart leads me. And I think thats the difference between a genuine artist and someone who just wants to make numbers. And you can tell when the audience feel it.
AM GOLDN(artist name) is what Alba Marina (real name) is when she not afraid, when she is on stage, she’s powerful, she’s golden. I had to come up with that artist name because most of my life I’ve been insecure. So AM Goldn is like a shield, to express herself and be vulnerable.
The thing im most proud of is that im not being afraid of trying and going for what I want. If this is just one life, why not try? I moved from the Dominican Republic to the East Coast and then to LA in pursuit of that one thing that makes me happy. I just want to see how it goes!

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I guess is not having kids when the time calls for it, or a “normal job”. My parents ask me all the time when am I going to give them grandkids. But thank God my sister just gave birth to her first child! I think is going to calm my parents down for a minute. Haha

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I used to be very inconsistent when posting and it wouldn’t be about my career. More so about cute pictures enjoying life here and there. Which is not bad because people also want to know about your life, but when I would write to venues about me wanting to perform or that one time asking an artist if they would like me to open for them, they would always ask to see videos of me performing.
So in the beginning of this year, I started being more consistent and taking this a a serious job. Is a slow and steady process but it got me 1,500 new followers this year. By promoting, singing popular covers, responding immediately to “my fans” or whoever is supporting my music. Posting two times a week to push the algorithm and having a certain aesthetic that tells people who I am as an artist and person.
As much as we dislike it sometimes, being consistent on social media can take you to unimaginable places and catch the eye of prominent people in the industry.
