We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alayna Pagnani Gendron a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Alayna thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
From the start, I knew I wanted my own chiropractic practice, even before going to school. In school, they only teach one business class, which isn’t enough to prepare you for starting your own practice. I won’t lie; the idea of starting my own practice right after school made me nervous. My husband gave me some advice that I now share with new grads thinking about it: going to school was the big risk; it cost a lot. Starting a practice can be small and cheap. You just need $10,000 and a room to begin, and then you can grow from there. Take a chance on yourself and go for it.
That said, venturing into entrepreneurship demands a specific blend of attributes: the right mindset, unwavering drive, and resilience to navigate the inevitable ebbs and flows of business ownership.
Here are some simple tips:
1. Start Small: You don’t need a big space to make an impact. Give yourself time to grow into your dream place.
2. Don’t Compare: Don’t look at others. You’re on your path at your own pace.
3. Focus on Your Practice: If you really want your own practice, be there both physically and mentally. Side jobs are distractions.
4. Connect with Your Community: Get to know people around you. Networking is crucial.
5. Believe in Yourself: You’ve got what it takes to achieve your goals. Trust yourself and go for it.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am incredibly passionate about supporting women and new families during the special moments of pregnancy, postpartum, and motherhood, and I am eager to collaborate with you to ensure that this period is the best and healthiest it can be for you. My journey into chiropractic care began with a childhood dream of becoming a doctor. However, it was my mother, a labor and delivery nurse and birthing class instructor, who suggested exploring chiropractic. Upon delving into the profession, I instantly fell in love with the idea that I could help people using just my hands—an honor and gift I cherish.
As a mother of two, I empathize with the unique challenges you face. I’ve been where you are, and I’m here not only to provide care for you and your family but also to offer support from one mom to another.
Allow me to introduce myself further. I, Dr. Alayna E. Pagnani-Gendron, hail from the Northeast and hold a Bachelor’s in Science with a major in Family Studies and Pre-med from the University of New Hampshire. During my undergraduate studies, I completed a rotation at the Kremples Brain Injury Foundation, working with patients dealing with traumatic brain injuries and nerve damage. My educational journey continued at Texas Chiropractic College, where I graduated with Academic Recognition as a Doctor of Chiropractic, alongside a second Bachelor’s degree in Human Biology.
Throughout my studies, I engaged in diverse internships, including the Moody Health Center in Pasadena, TX, where I focused on pregnancy and pediatric chiropractic. I also worked with recovering addicts at Cenikor in Deer Park and contributed to the rehabilitation of athletes at Rice University. My commitment to ongoing education led me to acquire special certifications in the Webster Technique, Advanced Webster Technique Training, Acupuncture, Myofascial Release, and Graston Technique. I completed my C.A.C.C.P. and earned recognition as a SOT® Pediatric Practitioner.
In my personal life, I share a home in the Montrose/River Oaks area with my husband, Brian, whom I met during undergraduate school. Our joy multiplied with the arrival of our sons, Thomas (8 years old) and Joseph (5 years old). Family time involves walks, Lego sessions, nerf wars, and travels. When not working or with my family, you’ll find me immersed in yoga and Pilates.
My commitment to patient care extends beyond chiropractic adjustments. I hold special certificates in craniosacral therapy and pre and post-frenectomy bodywork. I am passionate about treating pregnant patients, guiding them through the various stages of pregnancy, and ensuring their well-being. Additionally, I take great joy in caring for infants and children, supporting their health as they grow and reach milestones.
My professional achievements include earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, being honored as the Texas Chiropractic Association Young Chiropractor of the Year in 2019, serving as the Past President for the Texas Chiropractic Association (2021-2022), and sitting on the Texas Chiropractic College Board of Regents. I am a proud member of various associations, including the American Chiropractic Association, American Pediatric Chiropractic Association, International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, Women Chiropractors Organization, Houston Area Lactation Consultants Educators Association, and Women Leading Medicine. Supporting local philanthropic organizations in Houston is also a cause close to my heart.
My goal in patient treatment is centered around preventative care, promoting a healthy living lifestyle, and assisting patients in returning to their normal state of health. I derive immense satisfaction from treating the entire family, from birth and beyond, ensuring everyone’s well-being. I am excited about the prospect of meeting you and contributing to you and your family feeling your best!
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Chiropractic is not just a profession for me; it’s a way of life that I embrace every single day. It embodies my life’s mission, my dedicated work, and my profound passion. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to be immersed in a specialty that I not only love but deeply care about. If given the choice, I would repeatedly choose this profession without hesitation.
The ability to work with my hands and contribute to helping people feel their best is not just a job; it’s an honor and a privilege.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The key to successfully expanding my clientele lies in a genuine passion for my work and a sincere commitment to the well-being of each individual I serve. By providing personalized patient care tailored to their unique needs, I ensure an optimal and fulfilling experience. It’s not just about treating symptoms; it’s about practicing what I preach and fostering a sense of care and connection that resonates with my clients, ultimately establishing a foundation of trust and satisfaction. I consider referrals the ultimate compliment. It’s immensely gratifying to know that clients value my services enough to recommend them to others. It speaks volumes about the trust and satisfaction they’ve experienced, and I am truly honored to receive such endorsements.
