We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alaster Sampson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alaster , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
As I transitioned from moving from Atlanta, Ga., to Washington, DC, I knew I needed extra income in order to survive living in Washington, DC. I became very creative and decided to experiment with bartending and hosting events for fun. Low and behold, family, friends, and colleagues were fascinated by my hosting and bartending capabilities. When COVID hit, I lost my grandfather. After his passing, I knew I needed to think big and create my own business. I created a website, saved money, and promoted, promoted, and promoted Sampson Dynamite services. Low and behold, requests came in at a pace that was quite overwhelming. I bossed up and managed the outreach traffic and worked on every request that came in. What made my business successful was that I worked events over partying and hanging out
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into luxury event planning and bartending services in 2020. My dad and grandfather are both entrepreneurs, and although creativity runs through my bloodline, I knew I had a calling. However, I did not know what that calling was. Overall, I am a very disciplined, focused individual. Whatever you put your mind to will become reality. Ultimately, you must cast out all distractions and negativity in order to achieve success. I am living proof that mindset determines assets. What sets me and my business apart from most businesses is that I’m understanding, easy to work with, and put my clients first. Never argue, listen, take notes, and always make your client comfortable. It’s like Chick-Fil-A, everybody loves waffle fries.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media plays a pivotal role in being a successful business owner. In order to build your social media audience, you must post, post, post. Social media is all about image and creativity. Even if you’re not busy, post as if you are busy. Whenever a booking comes in, make sure you overreach and perform at the highest level possible. Word-of-mouth travels. Therefore, my advice is to continuously post. When your followers wake up, the first thing they should see is your business.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective way that I grew my clientele was to communicate. In order to be successful, you must always communicate consistently and clearly. Never leave your client wondering about what’s next. Act and communicate.
