We recently connected with Alanté Baugh and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Alanté thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
A brand that’s on a mission to impact people, emotions, lifestyles, and appearances through clothing/fashion. The Alanté Baugh brand mission is to design garments that celebrate people individuality and one that elevates people lifestyle.
Over the years I have watched man try on my clothes and watched their reactions. I noticed that every guy that tried on my clothes had the same reactions! Which is a reaction of surprised, Hope, and power. So many black men have been told that they are not enough, and that they are less of a men because they don’t have a lot of money. Which also make them feel powerless.
When guys put on my clothes they all say they feel rich, important. They feel like Jay z or P Diddy. Men who are powerful and made the impossible possible for their families. At that point I knew I had a important job to do! Which was to help heal men through clothing/fashion!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Alante Baugh is a Chicago based Fashion Designer and Powerhouse, best known for his groundbreaking Beauty and The Beast concept, that incorporates soft feminine attributes to masculine pieces. His style consists of a modern gothic, embellished with studs, pearls, spikes, and diamonds. Baugh has been in the fashion industry for over ten years, and his hard work has allowed him to establish a respected name for himself.
Born in Chicago, IL – Baugh grew up in a toxic – aggressive environment. Although navigating through Chicago’s segregated streets was difficult, Baugh used this to fuel his fashion career and gain inspiration. The “roughness” of Chicago became a metaphor for his creative expression. He identified similarities of the hood with gothy spikes and studs, which resulted in him creating customized combat boots for himself and eventually selling over 50-pair boots for friends and clients throughout Chicago. The massive response from selling his customized boots prompted him to transition from dance and work as a costume designer for the Full Effect Theatrical Dance Company along aside by legendary creative director Blair Christian, well known for her work with Missy Elliot, Ciara, Pharell, and more.
Alante is an alumnus of the Illinois Institute of Arts Chicago, where he perfected his craft in sewing, embellishments, and tailoring. During his senior year of college, Baugh participated in the Richard Driehaus Design for Fashion Excellence against a talented selection of students from the top fashion institutions. Alante debuted his first collection, “Modern Goth,” during the competition, and this opportunity landed him 1st Place and gave him the title of Top Student Designer in Chicago for 2016.
Alante’s collections can be seen on his website, social media accounts, and best seen on YouTube where he recently revealed his newest collection in a virtual fashion show film. If you are in the Chicagoland area you can also have the opportunity to see Baugh work in-person at his fashion studio.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I recently had to pivot and make a change in business! In my personal life I’m a very private person. Most of the time I am also private in business as well! But this can lead to not having enough content to share. Because I don’t show my work until I can present it in the best way possible. But I am learning that it is okay to share just a little bit more information with what the brand has going on and work on! So I am learning to share more on social media with my followers/supporters.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
To just not make everything about my brand so personal! There will be things that need to be done just simply because of business.
