We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alannah Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alannah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
When I first started my business Dance Like a Cupcake, I was selling cupcakes at events. One day, a mom came by to order some cupcakes for her daughter, who had food allergies. When I mentioned that my cupcakes were free from eggs and dairy, the daughters face lit up, and when she bit into the cupcake she did a little dance. That moment inspired the name Dance Like a Cupcake. It brings me so much happiness to see others light up when they discover that they can safely eat and enjoy delicious desserts, too!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Alannah Williams, and I’m the owner of Dance Like a Cupcake, a business specializing in gourmet, allergy-friendly, and plant-based desserts. I was inspired to start this journey by my brother, who has food allergies. Growing up, I saw how limited his options were and how challenging it could be for him to find safe, enjoyable treats. I wanted to create desserts that people like him could enjoy without worry.
The turning point for me came when I saw the joy on kids’ and adults’ faces as they enjoyed my treats without fearing for allergens or animal products. I realized that food should be inclusive and accessible to everyone.
Now, I’ve expanded beyond cupcakes and started focusing on selling gourmet cookies. My cookies come in delicious and creative flavors, like Pumpkin Spice Chai, Oreo Overload, and Strawberry Crunch. My cookies come in delicious and creative flavors, like Pumpkin Spice Chai, Oreo Overload, and Strawberry Crunch.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn is that only older people can own businesses. When I was 10 years old, I started Dance Like a Cupcake. At first, I thought I was too young to be taken seriously as a business owner. I believed that running a business was something you could only do as an adult.
However, as I started baking, selling, and connecting with customers, I realized age didn’t matter. What really mattered was delivering a great product. This experience taught me to believe in myself and focus on my goals instead of worrying about stereotypes or limits. Unlearning that belief helped me grow my business and inspire others to pursue their dreams at any age!
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
One of the most important things I’ve learned about managing a team and keeping morale high is making sure everyone feels included and valued. As I’ve been building my intern group for Dance Like a Cupcake, I’ve found that involving them in key parts of the process makes a big difference. For example, when I’m planning to sell at an event, I invite them to help choose flavors and contribute ideas. It makes them feel like they’re part of the business, not just helping out.
I believe that it’s best to create an environment where everyone feels like their voice matters and they’re contributing to something meaningful.
