We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alanna Beebe a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alanna, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I cannot remember a time in my adult life when I wasn’t taking a risk, both big and small. When I graduated college I moved to Peru only knowing one person but ready for any adventure that came my way. That led me to move to the United Kingdom where I worked as a nanny. Then, I took a volunteer job that paid a very small stipend back in the United States. It was risky because I had to figure out how to live on $800 a month, yet work in a big city. This risk launched my career. I was offered a job at the local public health department and immediately found my passion in equity and social justice. Fast forward to almost 10 years ago, when I decided to risk it all again but starting my own company. Sproutable was born out of a passion to support parents, caregivers and teachers with science-backed tools that could teach children relationship and social skills that would give them the opportunity to live to their full potential. Starting young, before the inequities have built up through a lifetime, is incredibly important. It’s so important that we can literally change the world by supporting our children with the skills they need to be successful in school and life. Putting all my energy into a company that does parent/teacher education was and still is financially risky. This is not a sexy company. It will not be a company that can grow like Uber or Airbnb – we are not a unicorn. However, it is worth the risk every day that I get to come to work with an amazing team and clients who’s lives are changed for the better. We are growing strong relationship, teaching life skills and watching the next generation blow us all away. “The only worthwhile achievements of man are those which are socially useful.” Alfred Adler (Positive Discipline is based on Adlerian Psychology)

Alanna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My background is in Public Health communications, early childhood and equity and social justice. Early childhood education is incredibly inspiring to me because of the opportunity to set children up with the skills to be successful in school and life. It is literally keeping people out of prison – we know that the preschool to prison pipeline is real. It is keeping kids in school and learning. It is keeping parents in their jobs and decreasing stress in families. We teach social and emotional skills and relationship skills. These skills are foundational. When children have this foundation they are able to learn and grow to their fullest potential. Our goal here at Sproutable is to send kids off into adulthood with a truckload of skills instead of a truckload of trauma and anxiety. I have the joy of showing up to a job every day that does this work. A job with a team that cares about kids and families and schools. A team that is always growing and learning.
Problem we are solving
Parents need trustworthy expert solutions when they are dealing with challenging behaviors. With stigma around parent education, most parents won’t seek out help until they experience serious challenges. There’s plenty of noise out there for parenting advice but little of this advice is actually vetted and science-based. A study from 2017 from The Early Learning Lab determined that “there are not very many products that are focused on supporting the social-emotional development of very young children.”
We plan to change this. Sproutable helps parents grow remarkable kids through online coaching, classes and videos. We have the best content for parents with children birth to adulthood who are looking for solutions to their parenting challenges. We help parents build strong relationships with their children by focusing on solutions and teaching life skills. Our vision is to help the world grow remarkable kids who grow up to be remarkable adults.
Most importantly we love to help. We have tons of free content, an incredibly inspiring newsletter and we answer every question that comes our way. Email us! [email protected]

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Absolutely. I am incredibly grateful and inspired every day.

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Passion. If you want to start a company you have to be passionate about the work you do. The every day grind is hard and the numbers don’t always work out. But if you are passionate, nothing is a waste of time.
