We were lucky to catch up with Alana Kinsey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alana , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I started creating art in 2021 as a creative outlet, mostly creating tiny doodles of pictures my friends posted on Instagram. I would post them on my social media and I started to receive positive feedback, which culminated in being invited to participate in a local art market. To have my art being shared with the public not just via my social media was nerve wracking and thrilling. The response I got at the market for my 2”x3” drawings of every day moments really drove me forward in pursuing art professionally. I got to see how excited people were to be able to buy a little piece of art that brought them joy. Not only was my art physically tiny, but it was also marked at an affordable price, making it accessible for nearly anyone to have a piece of original art in their home. The drive to provide original art accessibly to people and to bring life to the little moments that often go unnoticed through my art pushed me to start marketing myself more. I saw myself as an artist for the first time and decided that this was a professional path I’d love to pursue.
Alana , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a visual artist who works in acrylic paint as well as water based marker. I started art in 2021 as a creative outlet to de-stress from my 9-5 corporate job. I started out making tiny art which was 2″x3″ drawings of my friend’s instagram posts, which then lead to me creating large scale paintings of tablescapes and special moments for myself and my clients. A lot of my art is now centered around food and drink as well as the feminine experience. I like to focus on the typically overlooked moments in life and turn it into art, a lot of which is centered around food and drink, whether it be your wedding table mid meal, or a table littered with martini glasses after a girls night out. These moments hold weight and I love to capture them on canvas, turning them into art and making them a forever memory.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Something I had to unlearn was not deeming myself professional or successful enough to be called an ‘artist’. There is not a certain milestone or achievement that unlocks the title of artist, you are an artist if you say you are.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is making my client’s vision come to life or making a piece that resonates with a client. I love to take on my client’s ideas and be given the trust to put my own artistic flair on it, creating a special piece of work that encapsulates their vision.
