We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alana Dzurek a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alana, appreciate you joining us today. What was your school or training experience like? Share an anecdote or two that you feel illustrate important aspects or the overall nature of your schooling/training experience.
The Electrolysis industry is ancient, established in 1875, and schools haven’t quite caught up to the 21st century, as a matter of fact some schools still use books from the 60s. My immediate first training in the field of Electrology (permanent hair removal) was basically an introduction, it’s where I got a flavor of what my industry was like back in 1994. I certainly did not feel like I mastered the skill, frustrated and defeated, and searching for a better way to do Electrolysis, I found an expert in Multi-probe galvanic Electrolysis in Maryland, she was my mentor and pioneer in this frame of work. I am grateful and truly blessed to have found such a skilled professional who I learned from, worked for and eventually was able to create and perfect what she taught me.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My background is in Business/Marketing and corporate American. Unfortunately, I felt unfulfilled and not very driven there. So I decided to take a leap of faith and explore a profession I knew nothing about, permanent hair removal “Electrolysis” I began my training as most students do using a single probe (heat-based) technique which removes, 1 hair at a time, when I completed my training, I worked for approximately 2 years using this technique and found myself frustrated and unable to give my clients an accurate treatment plan, or pain management options; the regrowth rate was high and the pain factor was sometimes intolerable. That frustration led me down the path to find an alternative, and I found my mentor/instructor who used a 32 probe galvanic technique and was able to get pain management and treatment plans to clients. This method worked, and worked well! I set up my own practice in 1998 on the east coast, in 2011 I opened Beverly Hills Hair Free in Beverly Hills, CA and in 2021 I opened my second location in Dallas, TX. To date, we have treated countless individuals and given them back their “Hair-Free” lives. The Beverly Hills Hair Free brand is recognized internationally and we plan to open more locations in 2024. I am also building new technology with the help of my co-founders, and The Beverly Hills Hair Free system is scheduled to hit the market late 2024.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I have always faced obstacles, I wish everything was 100% smooth. I have had to prove myself, defend my reputation, and listen to people in my own industry slander, and challenge my work. Over the Covid shutdowns, I lost revenue, and moved from Los Angeles, to Dallas, I opened a second location and travel back and forth once a month. I also began building my new technology in 2017 and that endeavor has its own set of challenges. I hired an engineering firm and they gave me device that didn’t work, I hired another firm and they couldn’t deliver either, I finally found my team and we were just about to start production when Covid hit, so parts weren’t available and we had to re-engineer the entire technology. It’s been financially, emotionally and mentally challenging, but I can’t stop, and I need to complete this project.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I believe my passion, curiosity, my faith, and my drive is really what makes me and my brand so successful. I call it “the human condition” I want to help others, and people need and want to be helped. That’s what we try to give our clients, a little therapy, and a lot of hair-removal.
