We recently connected with Alan Porter and have shared our conversation below.
Alan , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s easy to look at a business or industry as an outsider and assume it’s super profitable – but we’ve seen over and over again in our conversation with folks that most industries have factors that make profitability a challenge. What’s biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
The biggest challenge to profitability in the creative industry is to make people realize the importance of design, its values, why it is not cheap, and that the design won’t necessarily speak to them but will do to the final customer/user.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a Mexican 31 year old creative and graphic designer with experience in branding, advertising, a bit of UX/UI, and my favorite part, designing & illustrating materials as posters, merch, and cover artworks for the music industry.
As a designer in the music business I am also part of a Mexican graphic artist collective called “Mercadorama” that is mainly focused in creating merch items for bands as clothing, posters, etc.
My first gig posters were released and requested by them, but now I’m trying to look to work with bands by myself and I´ve been successful to do it with some amazing bands that I was pretty excited to design posters for like: Osees, The Black Angels, My Morning Jacket, The War On Drugs, and the French psych rockers Swift.
One of the challenges of designing in this industry is that most of the times you don’t get a clear brief from the client or you don’t have direct communication with the artist/band members so sometimes the information is triangled, also sometimes clients think you can read their minds and you will deliver an incredible piece of artwork without any directions or information.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I really love to deliver fresh and creative proposals that aim to make people feel something.

Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I think is an interesting new way to collect art , but I’m a bit skeptical about it now and that the interest on them as far as I know from outside that media is that it has plummeted .
Also I think NFTs don’t substitute physical art but also in some point NFTs is a more affordable way to possess art pieces.
