Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alan Locher. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Alan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I created The Locher Room at the start of the pandemic to cheer daytime television fans up. We were all in the same boat and stuck at home looking for connections. My initial idea was to host an interview or two on Instagram Live, but when an actor suggested I use a streaming platform the rest as they say is history. To date, I have hosted over 300 episodes and interviewed more than 700 guests since I launched the show on April 3, 2020.
On December 2, 2020, I did my first episode of Conversations with Alan — a sub-series of The Locher Room dedicated to the rise of hate and antisemitism in the world around us. Both of my parents who are no longer with here were Holocaust survivors and having the opportunity to use my platform in such a meaningful way has meant the world to me. I recently hosted Tyler Clementi’s mother Jane to discuss the work they are doing to put an end to bullying.
The icing on the cake has been having the opportunity to raise money for various charities since I launched my show. Together we’ve raised over 100k.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
My career began in July of 1986 when I was hired as a Page for ABC television. I had the opportunity to watch, learn and meet some incredible people in the two years I worked there. I used every opportunity to learn and meet people. Those opportunities led to internships and my first job right out of college working for Live with Regis & Kathie Lee.
I spent about seven or eight months in that role before moving over to the marketing department for The Walt Disney Studios. I spent roughly eight years working in publicity on over 200 movies (The Little Mermaid, Dead Poets Society, Sister Act, Pretty Woman and Pocahontas). One of the incredible highlights was leading a team of 11 people to coordinate all national and local TV coverage for Pocahontas in Central Park. 100,000 people attended, making it the world’s largest movie premiere at that time. I also secured and coordinated all aspects of a live, three-hour television special on WWOR-TV, which further promoted Pocahontas and the premiere.
One of the first resumes I sent when I graduated college was to As the World Turns and Guiding Light. I had grown up watching these two daytime dramas since my mother learned to speak English watching them. I didn’t get that job the first time, but in 1997 I was hired as a Senior Publicist working on those two shows. A few years later, I was promoted to lead the PR team before they went off the air in 2009.
In 2010, I was hired at On Location Tours, a TV & movie tour company in NYC. I spent almost 10 years there as the Senior Director of PR, Marketing and Sales before the pandemic put a wrench in all our lives. Two weeks after that job ended, I launched The Locher Room.
In January of 2022, I became the VP of Sales for a media intelligence company, Truescope where I have also begun to host Truescope Talks.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey was truly unintentional. I never set out to host a talk show. My goal was to cheer people up during the pandemic and that was it. My plan was to interview actors and friends that I worked with on As the World Turns and Guiding Light for a few Instagram interviews. Once I changed course and started live streaming, viewers began tuning-in. I kicked this off so early in the pandemic that people were looking for a connection, looking for anything to take their mind off what we were all going through. I started to hear from these fans who told me that I helped them through a very dark time and that’s what continues to drive me.
Once people started tuning in they started asking me to interview other talent I had never worked with before. I began reaching out to other stars from all the other daytime soaps and the talent said yes. Here we are 2.5 years later and there’s no end in sight.
The Locher Room is dedicated to celebrating TV and movie fans around the world. My hope is that these shows bring smiles, entertain, and help raise awareness for socially relevant issues we are all facing today.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Getting messages from viewers who tell me I helped them through a dark time or that my show has introduced them to something they were previously unfamiliar with makes me feel like I’m putting a little good into the world.
Having been able to use my platform to raise over 100k for various charities including The Autism Society of America, Feeding American and Katonah Classic Stage, a non-profit theater in upstate NY. Katonah Classic Stage had just opened their doors right as the pandemic hit. We hosted a benefit in The Locher Room that helped them keep their doors open through the pandemic and now they are open finally doing what they set out to do.
