We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alan Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alan below.
Alan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
Upon reviewing I wish I started this journey sooner. I started around 2017 where I worked as a material handler in a distribution center. I always felt like something was missing in my life. Although I cannot rewrite time I feel like starting earlier would have definitely helped me a lot.. Honestly though I would not change anything about the journey it was meant for me.
Alan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve always been creative.
As a kid I didn’t really understand what that meant. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit rather it was cutting grass or washing cars I’ve always wanted to work for myself., I really had no idea of my ability I just knew I wanted to do it for myself. I took a photography class my junior and senior years in high school and that sparked the light bulb. I found something I can do for myself and I loved it..
But it didn’t start right away I went into the workforce like most creatives to create revenue and like so many I got so tied up into working I forgot about my passion. Spent years working up until I got laid off. During that time of unemployment I fell back into photography.
I think what sets me apart from most car photographers is that I’m not a prisoner to a specific brand or type. Motorcycles golf carts don’t matter I would love to see it.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
On my initial startup I did birthday parties, music videos etc.. but I still wasn’t happy. I realize that I went to a lot of car shows and that’s where my happiness lies. From that moment I ditch the parties and made a 180 to photographing cars and that has lead me where I’m at today.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my social media following of being consistent. I used the logic that if I’m posting everyday then I would have to be seen. So my advice to anyone trying to build a following in my opinion consistency is the key. I think pages that post a lot are far more engaging and worth follows.
