We were lucky to catch up with Alabama Blonde recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alabama, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I recently created a studio called ‘The Artists Studio’ and within this studio exists my work as an artist mentor, acting and performance coach. Within this I have created an initiative called ‘Passion Anarchy’ and launched the first ‘PUSH Program’, which is a 3 month program aimed to challenge artist’s mindset, commit to their goals & ultimately ‘push’ themselves from where they are in their life & career – to where they want to be. It is really about cutting out the bullshit and getting back in the drivers seat of their lives and careers. Because every creative deserves to make a living off of their work and have it treated as a career and not simply a hobby or a distant dream. Art is so much more important – and artists deserve to feel seen and respected. The first ‘PUSH’ program has been going exceedingly well and we have decided to run a second program starting in January 2024. Anyone who is interested should get in touch with me, spaces are limited and participants are invited to join the program after an initial consultation.
Alabama, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an artist – in the true sense of the word. I have worked in many different artistic disciplines, but they always come back to my love of storytelling & deep appreciation for what it means to be human. I am a Los Angeles based, Australian born, award-nominated Costume Designer, Casting Director + Actor Coach/Artist Mentor and have worked in the entertainment industry for over 10 years in Australia, London, Italy, Berlin and the United States. My work has been showcased at Mammoth Film Festival, Sitges Film Festival, Fantastic Fest, New York Fashion Week, Art Basel, Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion + Film Festival, Re-Evolution Berlin, Adelaide Fringe Festival, Midsumma Fringe Festival and the WOW museum in New Zealand & the World of Wearable Art Awards, where I was nominated in the Avant Garde category.
In 2017 I was nominated for the ‘Achievement in Casting Award’ by the Casting Guild of Australia for my show ‘Testament’. My artistry and work has always centered around a great desire to shed light and share perspectives on the LGBTQIA + experience, the female experience, social justice and youth culture. I am currently casting GG Hawkins feature film debut ‘AN ISLAND’ and recently wrapped on Jen Massaux’s debut ‘RECALL’ and Maxwell Nalevansky x Carl Fry’s feature debut ‘RATS!’. In 2020 I was appointed Casting Director and Contributor for global publication ‘Schön’. My casting and short film production highlights with Schön include work with Alfonso Herrera, Sadie Sink, Letitia Wright, Jamie Campbell Bower, Lexi Underwood and, most recently, Krysten Ritter, Justice Smith, Halle Bailey and Pom Klementieff.
I own my own brand ‘Alabama Blonde’, which I started in 2017 – that is really where it all came together. I had no intention for it to grow in the way it has. I really just loved storytelling, empowering people through dressing and creating with friends. I like the disruption that can be created through garments and act of dressing. People get so upset and triggered by what people wear – and it really amplifies how many conversations we can start through clothing. And how most people need to mind they own damn business when it comes to how others choose to express themselves. But I have always been very inspired by ‘why not’ & ‘what if’. Through my work for my own label I found myself working as an art director, designer & stylist for musicians, record labels, other brands & private clients. Highlights include my work with Korn, Charli XCX, Noah Cyrus, Machine Gun Kelly, Avenged Sevenfold, Saweetie, Tinashe, Jeffree Star Cosmetics & Kim Kardashian/Skims. The combination of casting and design naturally evolved into my work as a Costume Designer in the film industry.
My work as a Costume Designer includes the Kate Bosworth and Emile Hirsch thriller THE IMMACULATE ROOM, which premiered at Mammoth Film Festival and was awarded Best Film and Best Actor. DOWN HERE, directed by Omer Ben Shachar, won a 2023 Webby Award in the Avant Garde category and was featured on Nowness, Film Shortage, Directors Notes, Directors Library and Vimeo Staff Pick and Short of the week. Along with thriller SNOW VALLEY, starring Barbara Crampton, David Lambert and Cooper van Grootel & 1970’s coming of age comedy FEELING RANDY with Marguerite Moreau and Chris Mulkey. Most recently I worked on a 1980’s Texas thriller THE LAST STOP AT YUMA COUNTY by Francis Galluppi, starring Jim Cummings, Jocelin Donahue, Richard Brake, Nicholas Logan, Faizon Love, Barbara Crampton, Sam Huntington and Alex Essoe. The Last Stop at Yuma County premiered at Fantastic Fest 2023, and will be screened at Sitges Film Festival 2023 in Spain.
I have trained in the Meisner technique for 20 years and have taught the technique for 10+ years. I draw on my extensive training and experience in the film industry when coaching and mentoring young artists. My mission as a teacher, facilitator and mentor is to empower young creatives to develop their unique talents and amplify their formidable voices. I strive to have each creative I mentor and work with to feel truly seen, heard and valued, for the individual that they are and everything they have to offer and say. They are the creative leaders of our future. And – creation, art and living should be fun. Very fucking fun.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I feel it is simply the amount of times I have been told ‘no’ – and yet did not give up. No one really tells you about the ‘failures’ – for lack of a better word… because failure is such a dirty word. Ultimately I am a ‘success’ because of my failures. Because I never gave up. That’s really the only time you fail, is when you stop. Each ’no’ made me better at what I do – and hungrier to do it every day for the rest of my life. I don’t take the fact that I get to create every day for granted. But I have had SO many doors close in my face – but I knew I only needed one to open. I also knew that I wanted to be hired for me, who I am, the way I work, my aesthetic etc… not a version of me that I altered to get a seat at the table. EVEN if it took a little longer. I’d rather eat alone then sit at a table that I had to alter myself for in order to be welcomed at.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Organically honestly. For me the only thing that matters is authenticity. I would rather have a 1000 authentic, loyal followers who I am impacting – then hundreds of thousands who were bought or are there for inauthentic content that I am creating for ‘follows’ and ‘likes – instead of due to a genuine message which resonated with them. No one can do you better then you. It will always set you apart. I really feel these days people are craving realness – and real human connection.
