We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Al Loren a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Al, appreciate you joining us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
I started my Practice full-time in 1991. I had been training Martial Arts and Tai Chi for almost twelve years prior. I was in a corporate sales position at that time, but was not satisfied with that career choice. It was suggested that I start teaching and really excited me. I began to put all my waking energy into building this business that I became so passionate about. Thirty three years later I have a thriving Practice and am well known and respected for the work I do.
Initially to build my clientele; I would call schools and businesses offering my services. Many times I gave free demonstrations of both Martial Arts and Tai Chi; depending on which program was being offered. I posted many flyers of classes, mailed out information to perspective schools, Centers and Businesses. Was on the phone constantly talking to decision makers about what I teach. Telling everyone I knew and spoke to about it.
There was no internet or Social Media back then. It was old fashioned mail outs, Demos and lots of vebal self promotion.
Al, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
In 1991 I started teaching Martial Arts and Tai Chi fulltime. Prior to that I was in corporate advertising sales; which was paying the bills but not very enjoyable. A friend at that time suggested I start teaching. I had been training these two disciplines for over twelve years. When I considered this advice, It excited me tremendously and realized that I had found the passion and career direction I was searching for.
To market and promote myself, I immediately found a Center to teach at and started calling an abundance of small private schools, because they could make quick decisions for my services. I focused on teaching Martial Arts to Kids and Teens initially. I would go to public schools and give demonstrations of my skills and talk about the great benefits of training. This was significant, as I was able to recruit a large number of students for the studio space I was leasing. I would also offer an initial free class, which was very effective in acquiring students.
I contacted the local community education districts that offered Adult classes. I was teaching Women’s Self Defense Trainings and classes. The Community Education programs really helped to introduce me in the Community through their brochures being mailed out to thousand of residents quarertly. Please keep in mind that in 1991 there was really no Internet and no Social Media.
With Tai Chi, I decided that contacting retirement living centers which proved to be the best way to develop that aspect of my business. Fortunately in Marin County, California where I live, there are a great many. Tai Chi being so beneficial and the perfect exercise and discipline for Seniors was a huge success for me and continues to be currently.
In 1993 I got a call from an Occupational Therapist and asked if I would be interested in working with two nine year old boys who have learning disabilities. I said absolutely and that launched me into the world of teaching to people on the Autism Spectrum. Thirty one years later, I have taught thousands of classes and private one on one sessions to all ages of people on the Spectrum and many other neurodivergent conditions.
I also have written a Book on this topic, which is a three category bestseller on Amazon titled Martial Arts on the Autism Spectrum Practical Tips from Three Decades of Training Kids and Adults and am currently writing a second Book on this topic. I take a lot of pride in this work and have an excellent reputation in Marin County, California for this work. I get referrals from Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Doctors, Schools, Teachers and Families on a regular Presently, I have taught close to forty thousand classes and continue to have a full schedule.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
For thirty three years I have taken great pride in caring for the well-being of each and every person I teach. Working so deeply with all ages of people on the Autism Spectrum and other Neurological conditions; having a caring attitude is absolutely critical to having a successful Practice.
Professionalism is so very important in what I do. I take great concern in how I look, speak, and attitude of service. I’m always willing to give extra time and share knowledge at any time. I follow up regularly with students and clients who need it, making myself accessible to their needs. I strive for excellence in all the classes that I teach and this has been the blueprint for over three Decades.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
The most significant skills and qualities that helped me build my business are my Educaton, Martial Arts and Tai Chi skill set and interpersonal ability.
The Bachelors of Arts Degree from American University in Washington D.C from the School of International Service gave me the intellectual confidence to communicate and relate to professionals in any field. The forty four years of continuous Martial Arts training has helped me to overcome obstacles and have the inner strength to keep moving forward.
Most importantly advancing my reputation is the compassion, professionalism, patience and focus on delivering the highest form of excellence in every class I teach. Having taught close to fort thousand classes, has given confirmation to being popular and strong credibilty.
