We were lucky to catch up with AKOSWA ART recently and have shared our conversation below.
AKOSWA, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I first knew I wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally as early as the age of seven. I just knew I wanted to be creative. I started out in the music industry but I always used drawing, sketching and painting as an outlet. I moved into a more serious path after realizing corporate America; you know, the typical 9-5, was just depressing. I felt trapped. Having spent years navigating the corporate landscape, I ultimately realized that my true calling laid in the world of art. Making the bold decision to leave my desk job, I embraced dual roles as a business owner and a full time artist. The epiphany came about during the Covid pandemic, I had more time with myself to be more creative and turn my passion into a full profession.

AKOSWA, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is AKOSWA and I was born in Colorado Springs, CO and having roots in various places around the world as an Army brat. I currently reside in Charlotte, NC. I describe my work as modern, pop culture, abstract art. My work is versatile, using various mixed media, such as acrylic, pastels, spray paint etc. However, I love exploring other artistic realms, including digital illustration, street art, and wearable art. The thing that sets me apart from others is the abstract nature, mixed with bright colors, symbols, neon paints. I devoid representation from galleries or external sources. Although, I hold a hold a Master’s Degree in graphic design, I am most proud that I followed my passion and unwavering dedication that drives me to continuously craft expressive and audacious artwork.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
FREEDOM is the most rewarding aspect of being an artist. I would like to think that my work and creative process reveals art that transcends the mere act of creation, into a celebration of joy, happiness and narratives that emerge from each piece inviting the world to share in the experience.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I believe non-creatives will somewhat struggle because abstract art is not your typical traditional art. The interesting thing about abstract art is it is in the eye of the beholder. When viewing art, most people tend to lean towards a more literal meaning and view art as one dimensional. Whereas, this art form is fluid, meaning it is left up to self interpretation. I like to deconstruct and reimagine cultural icons, celebrities and media references presenting them in a fresh abstract light that encourages viewers to see familiar subjects in a new way.
