We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Akiane Kramarik a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Akiane thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
My painting style is a fusion of various influences, which I’ve termed “Akianism.” It encompasses elements of hyperrealism, impressionism, baroque, contemporary, and surrealism.
My practice has diversified across a myriad of genres, styles, and mediums. It spans from hyperreal large-scale acrylic or oil compositions to more fluid, almost abstract works that incorporate glass and gold, watercolors, or inks.
I draw inspiration from my travels, meditations, dreams, visions, and serendipitous encounters. My mission is to make the invisible accessible through poetic visual language.
The colors I choose are often predetermined, each carrying its own emotional story and meaning. I intentionally select specific colors to evoke particular emotions or themes, weaving together the intricate tapestry of the painting’s narrative. Even after 20 years of painting, it remains impossible to replicate any brushstrokes or mixed hues exactly. This is why art is a living miracle.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
During the first years of my life, my family experienced extreme
poverty and illness.
My journey as an artist began around the age of four, inspired by a deep connection to my visions, dreams, and real-life experiences. With the support of my family, I embraced painting as a means of expressing the beauty and mystery of the world. At six, I started experimenting with colors, which became my foundation later in life.
In the beginning, showcasing my work was met with challenges and criticism. Despite many local exhibits where visitors showed little interest or were harsh in their critique, I remained undiscouraged.
I began writing poetry at seven years old. At eight, the media shared my story around the world, resulting in many shows, including Oprah Winfrey Show. At ten, I published my first poetry and art book, then the second poetry book at twelve.
Over the years, I’ve participated in over two hundred charities worldwide, published books, traveled to 34 countries, and created nearly 300 pieces of artwork.
Even now, I continue to wake up at 4 am daily to paint and produce short films about my art. These films serve as a visual conduit for my philosophy, centered on hope and love.
Through my art, I’ve discovered a profound sense of purpose and connection that transcends language, inspiring positive change in the world.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Each of my paintings holds a unique meaning and evokes different emotions, aiming to foster unity and peace. I hope my art serves as a bridge, connecting people to deeper thoughts and feelings. Many have found comfort, love, and hope in my paintings and poetry. My goal behind sharing my work— to inspire and uplift others.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In the beginning, showcasing my work was met with huge challenges and criticism. Despite many local exhibits where visitors showed little interest or were harsh in their critiques, I remained undiscouraged. With the help of my family, their continuous support strengthened my determination. After receiving an invitation to the Oprah Winfrey Show at nine years old, my world changed. I learned a great deal about the responsibility of sharing my story with people of all ages and continued my mission of spreading love and hope through the arts.
