We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Akeema Bichali a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Akeema, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
Many people know my story and I continue to share it to both keep memories alive as well as to propel me forward and committed. My mom who’s been gone now for almost 15 years passed away on my wedding day. I had to watch her suffer with illness for years leading up to that. After she passed and I had to deal with the heartache of having that all happen on the day I was supposed to get married. I decided to learn more about the body. At the time of her passing I wasn’t working in health and wellness but I definitely became an expert in illness. I decided to go back to school to learn more about health and wellness. I wanted to know what really happened to her body and how I could help others in her place to avoid it. Over the last 15 years I’d like to say I’ve become an expert in healing and in moving forward in a way that enhances the well-being of an individual. Her life and her death are the reason why I do what I’m doing.
Akeema, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I spend my time teaching people professionally how to care for, love, heal their bodies. It’s a fine line between our physical health and our emotional health and I’d like to say that my profession allows me to flow easily between both of those. The majority of my education was acquired locally to where I live where I’ve studied holistic nutrition, holistic health, a series of body work certifications, and now currently going through education to get license as an acupuncturist. I currently offer natural health exams, I sell supplements that a source properly and organic, I do nutritional consultations, I offer varying massage options and services focused on women. I also utilize bio technology in my practice. My brand Princess Akeema is about living the example of health and healing and using my knowledge my education my life to help others.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Honestly younger me would have probably went to medical school. Not because of my desire to practice Western medicine but I would have loved to add on the holistic health and Chinese medicine component on top of that western medicine so that I could teach other professionals a bit more of how to support individuals on all fronts. It’s not this way or that way it’s really the integration and the working together for the betterment of the individuals and I feel like if I had more Western medicine education I could flow in some circles at desperately need the interaction of Chinese medicine professionals.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I think it’s important to have other professionals that you work with. There are plenty towns and people coming to my practice and they may need a service that I do not offer and I’m honored to refer them to other trusted practitioners. There is this notion that we are the alpha and Omega for people and we’re not. We have a portion that we play and even though people are drawn to our magnetic energy or from a referral ultimately when you’re thinking about what is best for your patient It may not be all found within you.
