We were lucky to catch up with Akash Das recently and have shared our conversation below.
Akash, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
We started this business in honor of our late father, Bidyut Bihari Das, a man of fine taste who loved his tea. Baba drank no less than 4 cups a day, keeping our cabinets stocked with different teas around the world. He believed that teas can heal, that they can provide some solace in the storm of life. We didn’t believe that until he was gone.
When he passed, we were sent many care packages from family and friends, almost all containing tea. And for the first time, we drank every tea given to us, while also finishing up the supply Baba left behind. The teas helped us sleep when we were convinced sleep had left us forever. They gave us something to look forward to in those dark times.
And so, after many months, we decided that we wanted to bring the healing benefits of tea to as many people as possible. We’re offering a beautiful box, stocked with tea selections that are chosen based on a client’s lifestyle, taste preferences, and wellness concerns. Our interactive quiz and machine learning algorithms help us know our clients.
Because community service was one of our father’s core values, we knew that we wanted our business to be an ethical one. Our valued brand partners are 100% organic, ethical, and fair trade. Some are also part of the Rainforest Alliance to help preserve our precious rain forests. We stand for sustainability, compassion, and service for all people involved in the process.
Akash, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We’re a family business. Though we come from different professional backgrounds, we found that together we could build something truly special. Our interest in tea truly sparked after we lost Baba and learned about the clinically backed benefits to drinking tea. Tea became a comforting connection to him and we grew to love it. We wanted our box to inspire others to reach their highest potential by living fuller, healthier, and more sustainable lives through service, empowered individuality, vitality, and inner peace.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
We’ve had to recalibrate our ingrained notions of efficient work. Growing up in the digital era, hustle culture had us believe that we need to work 90%+ of our waking hours. At the Das Tea Company, we make sure our hours worked are quality hours, not quantity. We believe that working effectively, getting our to-do lists checked off, and allowing ourselves time to explore our creativity, help us solve problems, reimagine marketing strategies, create engaging content, and best serve our clients and community. It’s an important practice to help us stay rooted to our values, respect each other’s boundaries, and genuinely enjoy the work we do for our business.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Being authentic, transparent, and truly wanting what’s best for our clients. We believe in steadfast integrity and honesty in our business practices. Our clients know our values, know what to expect from us and our teas, and support our vision of sustainable, ethically sourced products. Best part is, our teas are good for them, and they keep coming back. We love to see our clients recommending our boxes to their friends and family, encouraging others to try out our tea assortments.
We aim to bring these same principles in our messaging across our social media platforms. We create visual stories with themes, meaningful messages, and calming atmospheres. We want potential clients to be able to understand who we are as a business with just one post.
