We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Aka Luvéé a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Aka thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I knew at the age of five, I discovered that I can sing at a very young age. I used to listen to my grandmother sing all the time and admire her voice. I was raised into a family that had musical and artistic talents. If they didn’t know how to sing, they knew how to dance. If they didn’t know how to dance, they knew how to draw. I guess for me, I knew that being a professional singer has always been the career I wanted to pursue. I loved how performing in front of a large crowd made me feel, I felt heard. My first performance was at a fair, I would say I was around seven years old maybe younger. From then I joined every talent show, and summer activities that would help me develop my talent. I told my godfather at age twelve, that he was going to be my manager. I was always set on who will be apart of my team once I blow up.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello my name is Aka Luvéé, I am an upcoming singer from Ohio. When it comes to my music, I want to have a special bond with my fans. I want them to know that no matter what my career is and what I do, I am just like them. My music speak’s to the people that struggle with being heard and that also have dream’s they want to pursue. This is for the people that can’t find the words to express how they feel about an ex, old friend’s, family, themselves, and life itself. My music is an escape. What set me apart from a lot of upcoming artist, is that I’m not here for money and fame. I’m just a girl from Cleveland, Ohio, that grew up feeling like nobody heard me and my voice was my escape. Music is my passion and purpose in life. My heart is in this, not my ego.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
A lot of time’s society just needs to understand why competition isn’t always needed. This generation don’t support their own people because of egotistical reason’s. They fail to see that a win in their city, is a win for them as well. Even if that win didn’t come from them first. That win from whoever you supported is just a confirmation that you can do it too. This is what a lot of cities/states need and they don’t understand that this makes their journey to success so much easier. No matter if they are pursuing the same career or not. So go support the people in your community and watch that love be reciprocated.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to understand that I can’t bring everyone with me, when I blow. It’s something I that I taught my self, that I had to unlearn. I believed that this was what loyalty stood for, but it only was holding me back. I had so many opportunities in the past that would’ve placed me in the music industry at a very young age. In high school I had a friend that is now a known rapper world wide. He used to visit the neighborhood I lived in, he wanted me to come along with him before he blew up. He taught me a lot about the music industry and how to make it. At the time I was in a relationship, and even though the person I was talking to wasn’t the best for me. I turned down the opportunity, all I can think of was when I blow I’m bring him along. It took a couple years later to see that I was being un-loyal to myself at the end, I had to understand that not everyone is for you. And those people can’t come with you, even if you tried to bring them along.
