Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Aja Duniven. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Aja, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
I always set goals that far exceed what seems possible. I have a tendency to fight harder when I hear something is impossible. I wish to be known for my creative problem-solving that created real-world impact for billions of beings on this earth.
I can see my goal coming to fruition through education and activism for farm animals. I am extremely passionate about animal welfare and especially those that are most vulnerable. Humans are poised to completely restructure our relationship with the earth and all beings who live here. I hope my efforts will help forge a new way forward as a species that is rooted in compassion for all.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Most of my work is focused on Global Peace Train, a nonprofit organization I started in 2009. At Global Peace Train, we have over 45 avatars that represent the causes and projects we support. Each avatar is a unique storyteller and is designed to help people explore and learn about complex social problems in an accessible way.
The Global Peace Train characters are called avatars because they allow anyone to step inside the story. Through virtual reality or real-world costume-play (cosplay), players can become the avatars and build empathy for underserved communities.
Transformative stories are at the core of all I do. I thrive in telling stories of those who can not speak for themselves or who’s voices are often dismissed. This year I’m focused on making a short film called Ghost Dance with a Lakota Medicine Man named Dave Swallow and an incredible team of film professionals. Our goal is to create content that educates people about Lakota wisdom and helps preserve the culture before it is lost.
I play many different roles professionally, but at the core, I am an artist. Through my art, I wish to make a lasting impact on our world.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I have been using LinkedIn to connect with new people and I’ve been surprised by the outcome. There is a fair amount of time that goes into one-on-one calls with new contacts but the time investment has paid off. I have found new clients, connected with some great collaborators, and found resources that were not available to me before. LinkedIn has been a great resource to help me grow my business and professional network.
Any advice for managing a team?
I often lead teams and have found proper delegation can empower the whole team. Confidence and the right amount of challenge can help maintain high morale and a positive work environment.
As a leader, it is important to understand the strengths of those you work with and be able to delegate efficiently. It is easy to hand a task off to someone who isn’t the best fit for the project and end up in a sticky spot. When I’ve passed work off to team members that were not able to accomplish the task it puts projects behind schedule and also negatively impacts the confidence of the team.
When a project is delegated to the right person, the confidence and enjoyment of the whole team will follow. Get to know the strengths and weaknesses of your team. Offer tasks to those who are able and excited to grow and learn. Delegating has the potential to make your job easier while also empowering those around you.
