We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Aja Allen-Abraham a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Aja, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you scale up? What were the strategies, tactics, meaningful moments, twists/turns, obstacles, mistakes along the way? We’d love to hear the backstory the illustrates how you grew the firm
Social media was the game-changer that helped my business take off. Every morning, I’d engage social media, sharing my expertise, client shoutouts, and program offerings. It was all a matter of marketing myself! Starting with my product! Is my product great? Yes. Will my clients vouch for me? Yes! There it is. Great product + great customer reviews + social channels. That was my recipe for marketing my resume services and scaling up. It worked! In less than 6 months my business underwent substantial growth, and within a year I had a full client list on a monthly basis!

Aja, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello, I’m Aja Allen-Abraham, the owner of The Write Place Professional Resume Services. My roots trace back to the suburbs of Chicago, IL, where I honed my grit and resilience—traits that have truly defined my journey.
Over the past decade, I’ve immersed myself into the world of resume writing. It all began in 2013 when I started freelancing, crafting resumes for students and entry-level job seekers. Concurrently, my college days led me to a career in hospitality and involvement in talent acquisition. Witnessing numerous rejections based on seemingly “undesirable” resumes drove my mission to help job seekers secure their dream roles.
Establishing my business and brand became a pivotal step, and I’ve since dedicated many hours to assist jobseekers in landing career roles that pave the way for a better future! My commitment extends to offering a guarantee to my clients and being there for every step of their professional journey. Some of my clients have been with me for years, and what I cherish most is the impact I’ve made in their lives. It’s been a journey of resilience, growth, and a genuine commitment to making a difference in the world of career development.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
March 2020 is etched in everyone’s memory, I’m sure. Covid wreaked havoc, changing life as we knew it. The pandemic brought loss of loved ones, jobs, and stability, with businesses shutting down, and all of us confined to our homes. It was an unsettling time. In the midst of it all, I had to quickly pivot with TWP. The idea of updating resumes seemed trivial when the world was at a standstill. I had to reassess what my clients and jobseekers truly needed during those trying times.
In response to the pandemic, I offered complimentary updates to affected and new clients. Free resume reviews were offered to my supporters who reached out. I sponsored resumes for single mothers and college students, serving as a resource for all clients in job searching, interview preparation, salary negotiations, and acting as a professional reference when needed. Navigating through the toughest times in my business, I’m immensely grateful for the ability to pivot.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My reputation has been built through delivering real results and earning referrals through word of mouth—a testament to genuinely supporting my clients in their professional journeys. I put in the hard work to make sure each resume has the power to speak for itself! With a client guarantee in place, I provide hands-on support throughout the job search journey.
Clients who have experienced great success in their job searches are often excited to recommend my services to others. Organic endorsement speaks volumes about the quality of my work and it 100% helps build my reputation.
