Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Aiyi Cheng. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Aiyi, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
From the very beginning of my practice, I found myself in love with freeing my subconscious mind and letting it create abstract forms, mysterious creatures, minimal shapes, and compositions. I discovered that working intuitively and subconsciously interests and suits me, and gives me opportunities to experiment creatively throughout the practice constantly. Essential skills for me are spending time with my thoughts and imagination, making a sudden idea into physical works, and using sculpture, painting, and sound-making as media to transform my language into them.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As an artist and a model, making art is my leading practice and lifetime career, and modeling is another form of me “making art.” That the difference is one is me creating a piece, and the other is me being the piece. I’m so shy and introverted. I talk too little about everything in real life and keep everything inside way too much, but making art as a way of expression helps me find the balance of it.
I always see connections between the performance of me making a piece of art and me during a photoshoot. Although they are being presented differently, it’s meaningful that they both express my feeling, my experience, and my tiny little thoughts to the outside world.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Majored in Fine Art and experienced working at galleries; I thought that it’s not as easy when the independent artist shows their work to a larger group of audience. Sometimes, the effort and time that artists put into their work aren’t being appreciated and valued, and I hope artists get more of what they deserve in all aspects. Their views and what they are making is unreplaceable.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Living surrounded by other artists and creatives inspires each other. Also get to know or work with other artists and creatives in different fields, bringing benefits to each other through personal handful skills.
