We were lucky to catch up with Aivy League recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Aivy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
Growing up with immigrant parents things weren’t easy being the eldest. Both my parents started the own seperate businesses right before I was born meaning I was often left to learn a lot of independence at an early age. Not only am I grateful for the leadership skills I gained but the 3 languages (really more like 2.25 ) I had the opportunity to learn early on as well. It was a blessing in disguise in my younger years because now as I’m older, I have the upmost respect for my parents and for those who grew up in multicultural households in America in the 90’s. My parents and I didn’t get a lot of time together when I was young, but when we did it was never wasted and I always learned something new from building furniture to ice skating. They made sure to always support me when I was trying something new and let me communicate with them if I didn’t want to do it anymore (like horse back riding 😅) I learned to be adaptive and problem solving but also caring. I learned the difference between being nice and being kind. I learned to put myself first but always offer a hand to those in need. And I learned all that from my parents.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For everyone reading this, whether you’ve never heard of me or have been following for awhile I wanted to formally introduce myself. I’m Aivy, pronounced ‘I V’ am a content creator and food guide located in The DMV where I was born and raised. I started being active on social media in 2017 which led me to a career in social media which I was doing full time until summer of 2021. The last year before I retired from full time to only part time was no longer something I enjoyed doing. My #1 daily goal is to make sure I’ve done something that makes me happy, so I switched to content that I enjoyed making & I also decided to no longer manage social media for clients….which led to SpicyAivy, my newer insta account where I post things in a blog style. I often collaborate with restaurants and highlight “DMV things to do” for activities and events in the DC, Maryland, Virginia area. I also host ladies events like karaoke night, beach days, alpaca meet and greets & so much more to provide support and making new female friends from foodies and content creators alike which is my pride and joy. I absolutely love hosting events and especially the ladies ones because so many connections and friendships are made each and every event. Overall I don’t necessarily say I have a niche as most creators do, but simply I’m a DMV based creator who loves to eat tummy food and host awesome intimate events for foodies, creators and women.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
“Everything is content” mindest for creators is often something non-creatives don’t understand usually and often can find someone recording a video or taking a photo in public cringey or rude but I find it so empowering. (As long as you’re quick and not hurting anyone) but I wish I could just take a strangers one, someone who doesn’t create content for themselves and take a cute photo or video of them to show that they’re able to do the same thing as us. It takes time and commitment but absolutely anyone can be a creator or create amasing content even if it’s just for them to hang on their wall or just to make a scrap book. Content can be anything and for anyone.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
My #1 goal each day is to make sure I’ve done something I enjoyed, from eating a piece of cake I was craving or simply taking a photo I’ve been wanting to create. The most rewarding part of creating content is seeing how much other people like your ideas too! I love hosting events that a ton of people are interested in or a photoshoot with a theme that multiple people want to do. I absolutely only post content that I love and supporting small businesses are so big for me. The difference before myself is that I don’t photoshop things, I’ll add a filter but I won’t delete someone in the background of a photo or shrink my body to submit to body standards. I love being a honest and real account that shows the imperfections of life that I think we should all embrace.
