We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Airyen Vay a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Airyen, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Probably the biggest risk I have taken so far was to move from Romania to US by myself. I always dreamt of making it big in the music industry so there was one point, when I realized that in order for this to happen I will have to get out of my comfort zone and make some big changes in my life. First two weeks were hilarious, I had no idea of what I was going to do and I didn`t know one single person. I think I was a bit delusional but If there is one thing that I proud of, is that I didn’t give up back then and I decided to stay, despite the circumstances. .I am a firm believer in listening to your heart when making a big decision and despite the challenges, I am convinced that eventually persistency and dedication will pay off.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I`m a singer songwriter, I was born in Romania and I have moved to US a while ago to accomplish my dreams and take my career as far as possible. I got into music when i was 9 years old, I started to take vocal lessons and learn instruments like piano, guitar and flute. My main goal is to make music that people can relate with, that inspires them to be a better versions of themselves. I often approach in my music themes as togetherness and love, while remaining authentic and true with myself.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I believe that there is nothing more rewarding in being an artist or a creative than seeing your audience being impacted and inspired by your craft. Bringing joy to people or even making them see a sad situation from a different point of view, brings me a lot of joy. To me, my entire work and goal is about leaving a mark and making a change in the world.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
One of the books that had a really big impact on my management thinking was ” The Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell. . I understood that many pieces of the puzzle need to come together in order to achieve success. It taught me that I need to learn how to create opportunities, while before reading this book, I was just waiting for them to come to me and I would get frustrated when they didn’t. Now, I just create the opportunities and I am putting the effort in creating the proper context for those opportunities to come to me. It gave me a healthier way to look at everything and I realized that you have to make the best with what you have, without fear, without complaints. I highly recommend this book to anyone out there who is looking to break boundaries and have success in their field.
