Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Airy Choi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Airy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The idea behind Airys Family Dentistry traces back to my childhood, where my frequent dental visits became a source of comfort and inspiration. From the waiting room’s “Highlights” magazines to savoring prophy paste flavors and inquisitive conversations with my dentist, the dental environment has always held a nostalgic significance to me. This personal connection fueled the vision to recreate a positive atmosphere for all of my patients.
My belief that everyone deserves a beautiful, healthy smile became the cornerstone of this endeavor. I aimed to address the common issues of dental anxiety, apprehension, and fear associated with dental visits. The logic was clear yet potent – offer a unique, patient-centric approach that transcends traditional clinical settings. Airys Family Dentistry emerged not just as a solution to dental issues but also as a response to the emotional concerns accompanying them, where our patient’s comfort is prioritized.

Airy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a general dentist and have been practicing for a little over three and a half years. My primary emphasis as an oral healthcare provider lies in nurturing meaningful connections with my patients. I firmly believe that a genuine understanding of their lives, concerns, and aspirations enables me to provide personalized dental treatments that cater to their unique needs. Whether encompassing restorative procedures, cosmetic enhancements, or specialized TMJ and orofacial pain therapy, the array of comprehensive services I provide is tailored to address the diverse oral health needs of my patients. My commitment is to provide dental care to my patients that I would personally find satisfactory for my own oral health and my loved ones.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I graduated Tufts University School of Dental Medicine during the peak of the COVID pandemic which left me on a five-month hiatus from dentistry. Coming out of the shutdown, I ventured into the realm of corporate dentistry, quickly realizing that it did not align with how I want to practice dentistry. I yearned for an approach marked by unparalleled personalization, seamlessly integrating cutting-edge dental technology to deliver superior care to my patients, with an unwavering commitment to comfort and quality. Driven by this ardent aspiration, I chose to transition towards working in private practice.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
With any business, it is imperative to have a positive work environment for your team whether it is a dental office or a restaurant. To effectively manage a team and maintain high morale, focus on clear communication, recognizing and appreciating efforts, providing growth opportunities, setting realistic goals, promoting work-life balance, creating a positive work environment, addressing concerns promptly, empowering and trusting your team, celebrating successes, and leading by example. Encourage open communication, acknowledge achievements regularly, support professional development, set achievable goals, respect work-life balance, foster a positive culture, promptly address concerns, give autonomy to team members, celebrate successes, and demonstrate the values you expect. Adapt these principles to your team’s specific dynamics, seek feedback regularly, and consistently show commitment to the team’s well-being and success.
