We recently connected with Airam Dato-on and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Airam, thanks for joining us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
Bringing people together. I pride myself in connecting people whether its someone visiting a new city or in their current city. I want to be remembered for connecting folks that otherwise would’ve have crossed paths.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a community manager for Pexels. I focus on building community in the photographer, videographer, and model space by organizing events where they can create content together.
When I started to build my photography portfolio, collaboration with other creatives was how I built it fast. It was those instances of connecting and creating together that built my reputation and got my name out there.
It was a great segue to become a community manager who organizes these collaborative events so that people can build and have something fresh in their portfolios and also connect with a community of creatives in their area.
Have you ever had to pivot?
My background was in branding and graphic design. I did that when I was living in Hong Kong right after college from 2013-2019. When I moved back to Orlando, FL in 2019, I completely pivoted out of the design world and into social media management and photography.
It was somewhat related but it was a completely different world for me. I had to learn and understand digital marketing and understand how a photography/marketing business is run.
I never looked back and I have enjoyed being in the photography world. It got me out of my desk and into the world. I was able to appreciate the city that I live in a bit more as well.
Being a graphic designer felt like I was stuck at a desk staring at a screen for hours and hours at a time. I still design here and there but I am a bit more picky with the clients that I work with.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Consistency is key. this can mean, posting 3-5x a week or 7 days a week. Be sure to set out achievable tasks for yourself that will not sacrifice your health and time with your love ones.
Consistency doesn’t mean you post new stuff every day! Repost, reuse, and recycle your work. If you have 30 pieces of content that you have put out, there are ways to reframe something that will make “new” content but it’s just recycled work. Also, don’t be afraid to repost anything!
Some of the viral/growth-leading posts that I’ve made were reposted or recycled content.
Be consistent but don’t kill yourself doing it.
