We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Aimee Fuller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Aimee, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later?
I started my business 12 years ago in January of 2010. I was a stay at home Mom that had experience in photography and was more of a hobbyist photographer. I would take pictures of my own babies and over time friends and family would see my work displayed in my home or shared on social media, and ask me to take their baby’s pictures as well. I really enjoyed working with babies and capturing that small moment in time before they grew. After a few photo shoots, I set up a make shift studio in my home living room and started taking photography sessions. Over time, as my work was shared in the community, I became busier. Word of mouth and social media were huge for me in growing my business at the time. I really felt like photography gave me an outlet from the every day mundane chores of motherhood and gave me a separate identity that I thoroughly enjoyed. The timing was perfect because I was able to stay home with my children and be there for them, while I also did something that gave me joy and a creative outlet on the side. The niche of newborn baby photography was just taking off when I went into business so I was fortunate to get my name recognized in the area, build my business and create my brand. Soon thereafter when my business was more than a fun hobby, I purchased a small home in the area and made it into my studio. I haven’t looked back since.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into the niche of newborn photographer after I had my first son, Jacob in 2003. My husband and I struggled for 4.5 years to get pregnant with a healthy pregnancy. We had infertility issues and miscarriages leading up to Jacob’s birth in 2003. I was immediately enamored with my beautiful new son after he was born and every day was a photo shoot! I really started honing in on the craft of newborn photography over time practicing with my own babies, as I went on to have Joshua, my second son, in 2005 and Sarah, my daughter, in 2008. Over the years I would take pictures of all of my babies as they grew and it gave me the foundation to build upon and grow. I really loved capturing all the special moments of their infancy and toddler years. Before I knew it, I was photographing all of my Friends babies as they grew and word of mouth spread. I was getting referrals and phone calls on a daily basis of people wanting me to photograph their babies for them. I joke, but it’s true, newborn photography found me and I just embraced it and expanded upon it building my own style and brand along the way.
I have been in business since 2010 officially and have been blessed with so many wonderful opportunities capturing celebrities, sports figures, prominent people in the community, surrounding areas and different states in the U.S. babies. I’ve mentored photographers from the United States and out of the Country that have flown in to my studio to learn from me. I was blessed to be on the TLC show, “OutDaughtered”, photographing the only all Girl Quintuplets in the U.S. The Busy Quintuplets. I’ve been featured on Local News Shows, various television outlets, national magazines, local and national newspapers and numerous social media outlets highlighting my work.
I am most proud of my customer service and how I am able to build life long relationships with my clients. I don’t see my business necessarily as a “job”, but something I love to do and I don’t take it for granted. I feel like I become friends with every client that steps through the door and I love that about my studio. My work gives me the opportunity to socialize and build relationships with people that appreciate my work and have chosen me for something that I give my all in and show my passion through. I learn so much about people and their lives that I go home at the end of the day each day happy and fulfilled.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My Goal with every session is to capture every baby in a unique, yet personal way for their families. Newborn Babies are only this little for a fleeting moment in time. I really put a lot of thought and effort into every newborn baby session to give each family something special and meaningful to them for years to come. I want every family to look back at their images of their sweet newborn babies and know that I put my heart and soul into creating art just for them of their individual baby. Each Baby is different and special in their own way so it’s my goal and mission to enhance and show off each baby’s individual beauty!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The Pandemic was a rough period for my business. I really had to be patient just like every other small business owner and wait out the Pandemic. I wanted to keep my family safe at home, but still be there for my clients. I really had two years of back and forth with local level restrictions shutting down my studio for months on end. It was a real struggle emotionally and financially for my studio, but patience and perseverance paid off and I am glad to be back full time doing what I love.
