We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Aimee Frisk a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Aimee, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
My name is Aimee Frisk, and I’m the founder of Twin Peaks Therapy. My journey into this work began when I started supporting women through various stages of their breast cancer journeys. While working in a hospital setting, I was approached by several post-mastectomy clients seeking help with their recovery. It became clear that this was a specialized area of care that required a delicate and informed approach—something not widely available near me. After researching treatment options and finding no practitioners nearby who could meet these needs, I discovered an inspiring Occupational Therapist from Australia—a true pioneer in the field. I studied under her and absorbed everything I could to better serve women in need. Motivated by this, I spent the next four years pursuing advanced education and training, earning certifications in both Massage and Lymphatic Therapy, along with in-depth expertise in scar tissue management.
Throughout this time, I realized I could provide so much more than physical healing. This work could help reduce stress, anxiety, and nausea while improving range of motion, supporting the lymphatic system, and enhancing overall wellbeing for those navigating the breast cancer journey.
But this path didn’t start here. After high school, I followed the traditional route, earning a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from UNLV. I spent a few years teaching, but soon realized it was not my true calling. So, I pivoted into a sales career in the tech industry before eventually pursuing my real passion in massage therapy.
In 2010, I began my Massage Therapy Program at the International Professional School of Bodywork in San Diego, balancing a full-time sales job and school. After two years, I graduated and worked nights and weekends as a massage therapist until I had my daughter.
When I became a mother, everything changed. I found myself missing key moments of her early life—like her first steps—and knew I needed a career that allowed me to be present. I made the decision to leave my full-time job and pursue massage therapy full-time, first as a part-time therapist in a local hospital. It was there I met a post-mastectomy client seeking deep scar tissue work, which piqued my interest in this area.
When I could not find anyone in San Diego specializing in post-breast cancer recovery, I set out to change that. Mentorship from Professionals all over the world, along with my ongoing education, has given me the knowledge and confidence to support this incredible community.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I believe word of mouth and referrals are the most effective strategies for growing a client base. When someone has a positive experience, they naturally want to share it with others. In my field, that’s especially true—many of my clients have recommended my services to friends, family members, physicians, and nurse navigators. That kind of organic growth not only builds trust but also helps form a strong, supportive network within the community.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Absolutely—100%. I would do this over and over again. If I have any regret, it’s only that it took me so long to get to where I am now. I truly love what I do. I’m inspired every day by the incredible, resilient women I work with, and I feel honored to play even a small role in their healing journey. It’s a privilege to support them, and it’s what fuels my commitment to this work.
