Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Aimal Khan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Aimal thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I had been friends with my business partner, Khusbu, since high school, and we always wanted to become business owners. Khusbu came from a long line of business owners and I became the owner of a fried chicken shop soon after graduating from high school. As life went on, I sold my business and Khusbu attended college. She married our third business owner, Harvinder. One day we were all hanging out and reminiscing on our memories over the years and all the struggles we have been through and the topic of having our own business began. At first, we just discussed it as if it were a dream which we would not be able to achieve until years later. Fortunately for us, we continued poking at this topic and having in-depth conversations until one day we went to our local municipal court to get some answers to our questions and to seek guidance. The information provided to us seemed doable however, the financial aspect of starting a business was holding us back. Luckily, Khusbu was equipped enough to help start up the business and once we had the funds confirmed, we put our plan into action. We had to make countless phone calls to numerous different agencies to get all our paperwork completed. Once that was all submitted we had to wait and wait and wait for verification so that we could proceed and purchase a vehicle for our limousine business. Every step of the way we faced hurdles and were forced to gain more knowledge in the field to overcome them. Harvinder and I were both professional drivers which helped our situation tremendously, but becoming business owners was much more challenging than we had anticipated. After months of going back and forth with the appropriate state facilities, we had finally achieved our official business title. We were able to proceed with purchasing a vehicle! However, the vehicle we wanted to purchase was in high demand, so availability was extremely limited. We kept looking and reaching out to dealerships, and one day we decided to just show up to one in person, little did we know, luck was on our side and the vehicle was available! We purchased it as soon as possible and took off! After a few months of having our limousine business established, we came across another hurdle, we were not getting any clients yet even with spending so much money on advertising. We kept trying because we were determined not to give up, and then, one day, we received a phone call from our very first client. We were so excited and promptly planned out an entire schedule based on this one ride. We successfully completed this one service just to come across many more weeks of waiting and anticipating that we will receive many more clients. Unfortunately, that has not changed much and we are still in the search of clients. We do receive a client here or there but that is nowhere near enough to run a business just to cover business expenses. We all dedicated ourselves to this business and have received no great outcomes as of yet. For the meantime, we decided to use the vehicle for Uber and Lyft to provide luxury rides and to earn some money to pay for the business expenses that were adding up. We were hopeful that this decision will help us manage this business venture that we began. Instead, just yesterday, out of nowhere, the gasket blew and the vehicle became overheated. We had to incur the expense of towing the vehicle and are now waiting for the company to get back to us regarding fixing the vehicle. We were extremely disheartened since this vehicle was purchased brand new just 3 months ago and has not been excessively used at all due to our lack of clientele. Even now, we are trying our hardest not to be negative and to continue being hopeful. We have had so many setbacks and obstacles stand in our way yet, we are going to continue with our positive attitude with the hope that one day soon, our business will flourish!

Aimal, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Posh Limousine Services is a company made by three friends who are extremely, disciplined, dedicated and hardworking who all share the dream of building a successful business together. With this success they hope to grow happily old together and use profits to help those that are underprivileged.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I found my business partner through high school. I had just immigrated to America and had nobody to talk to. One day, Khusbu approached me because she noticed that I had been having lunch alone for the past week and she asked if I wanted company. I politely said yes, and from then onwards, we spent lunch together everyday. Our lunchtime friendship grew into a beautiful friendship of over 10 years now. We have laughed together, cried together and have done everything else in between together as well. She always tells me that I am like the brother she never had. I am blessed to have such a wonderful best friend and I am sure she feels the same.
Any advice for managing a team?
When managing a team, positivity, respect and care is of utmost importance. If you care for your workers, they will care for your clients. If you display positivity with respect, it will spread like a contagious disease and that is one of the most beautiful things about having a team.
