Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ailin Gong. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ailin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I have worked on numerous great projects, one of the most recent being the third season of “The Righteous Gemstones,” where I held the role of a foley editor. In this capacity, my responsibility involved meticulously cueing and editing sound effects related to characters’ actions, encompassing everything from rustling clothing and footsteps to gestures and falls. These subtle yet crucial auditory details are instrumental in elevating the authenticity and immersive nature of each scene. Additionally, foley work addresses sounds that are often hard to locate in standard sound effect libraries, such as the resonance of wood and metal crashes, the shattering of glass windows, or delicate elements like the vibrations of insect wings or fluttering flags. In one notable episode, a prolonged scene features a swarm of colossal locusts. To authentically capture the multifaceted sounds encompassing various locust movements, while considering the intricacies of Atmos mixing, our approach to sound design involved employing distinct layers. This encompassed separate sound of locusts making contact with wood, ceilings, and metal surfaces, enhancing the intricate auditory spectrum of their presence. Additionally, we obtained a spectrum of recordings, ranging from individual locusts in flight to the passage of a substantial locust swarm. We also created the sounds of locusts being stepped on and crushed, strategically integrating these audio layers with the characters’ footsteps. This combination effectively conveyed the impression of a multitude of locust bodies strewn across the ground. It was an enjoyable experience, and the results were truly gratifying.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
