We were lucky to catch up with Ailén Videla Ortiz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ailén, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
As an artist, I can confidently say that I am incredibly happy pursuing my passion every day. It brings me immense joy to see my artistic vision come to life and achieve my dreams in this field. I strive to live a life where going to work feels like a privilege rather than a chore. However, I do acknowledge that being an artist can be challenging. The unpredictable nature of gigs, rehearsals, and last-minute events makes it difficult to maintain a steady “normal” job. While the routine and consistent pay of a regular job have their advantages, I wouldn’t trade or envision my life any other way. The fulfillment I find in my artistic journey outweighs the challenges I face, making me grateful for the path I’ve chosen.
Ailén, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Dance has been an integral part of my life since before I was even born. Growing up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, I was fortunate to have a mother who was a professional ballerina, exposing me to the world of dance from a young age. When my family and I moved to the United States, my passion for dance blossomed, and at the age of twelve, I began taking it seriously. I underwent rigorous training in various dance styles and eventually had the privilege of joining a couple of ballet companies.
Seeking to broaden my horizons, I pursued higher education at Point Park University, where I earned two degrees: a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and a Bachelor’s in Psychology. With my educational foundation in place, I made the bold move to Los Angeles to pursue a multifaceted career in dance, modeling, and acting. Along my journey, I’ve had the opportunity to work with various TV shows and movies as a stand-in, allowing me to gain valuable insights into the film industry.
Presently, I am thrilled to serve as an assistant manager with Eighty Eight Studios while touring with Asian artists across the United States. What sets me apart from others is the unwavering discipline I hold myself to and my exceptional organizational skills and dedication. I firmly believe in the importance of punctuality, so being on time to me means arriving early, as being merely on time is already considered late in my book. I take pride in following through on my commitments and always putting in the necessary hard work to achieve my goals.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist lies in the ability to create stories and evoke emotions through art and dance. Witnessing how the audience connects with and appreciates my work is incredibly gratifying. Their reactions and expressions of love and enthusiasm make each show, event, or video truly special. Knowing that my art has the power to touch people’s lives and elicit emotional responses is what drives me to continue pursuing my passion as an artist.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Non-creatives may struggle to understand the depth of time, passion, and commitment required to pursue a creative journey. Being an artist is a genuine profession that demands dedication and practice, just like any other job. Some individuals mistakenly believe that artists don’t require support or assistance because they perceive their contributions as insignificant. However, what they fail to realize is that artists play a vital role in creating all forms of entertainment, such as music, TV shows, movies, events, concerts, and more. Without artists, people would have no outlet for relaxation and decompression after a long day of work, highlighting the essential contribution they make to society.
