Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to AIDEE MEZA. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
AIDEE, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
A huge and life-changing risk I took was leaving my previous field: Esthetics.
I had invested thousands of dollars into school, courses, and obtaining my esthetician license. I had a clear plan and vision for my career.
However, through my relationship with Jesus and being guided by Him, I left the field. It was one of the scariest moments of my life because I had no idea what I was going to do next or where I would go; in terms of work.
But He kept leading me, and I eventually stumbled into the career I’m in now-Interior Design. I had to trust, obey, and have faith.
Leaving a career I had envisioned and planned for my entire life was difficult. But through my trust in God, His favor, and the new opportunities that came my way, I was led to a higher purpose: designing and creating art.
AIDEE, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Aidee Meza. I am a first-generation interior design student and creative, rooted in Atlanta, GA. I come from a working-class background and grew up without much wealth.
I share this because interior design is often considered a career of privilege. On top of that, only about 20% of interior designers are people of color-and for Hispanics, it’s around 15%.
With that said, what sets me apart is my authenticity. My humble beginnings have shaped me into someone full of compassion, strength, and resilience. These qualities have molded me into the kind of person who is being prepared for success-not just as a designer, but as a future business owner.
I don’t see interior design as just a service-l see it as art. I design spaces that evoke emotion-feelings of peace, tranquility, and rest. I don’t just design spaces; I create havens. Whether residential or commercial, I am ambitious and eager to explore the full depth of interior design.
Lastly, my dream is to one day open a school-or schools-for creative students from low-income backgrounds, giving them the opportunity to discover and grow in this field. My heart is to serve-not only my clients through design, but also the community I come from: the working- and middle-class.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
My response to this question will be short, yet powerful:
I met my co-founder and business partner three years ago-back in 2022, when I was just finishing esthetician school.
His name is… Jesus Christ.
He is the one whom has guided my feet in my journey ever since then. (Psalm 119:105)
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe what helped me build my reputation was definitely my previous career in Esthetics. I had already run-or rather, attempted to run-a small business, and the wisdom and growth I gained from that experience prepared me for when | launched Atelier Aidee.
From the very beginning, even before starting school, I created my design brand with confidence, despite not being fully immersed in the field yet. I threw myself into it and kept knocking on doors, looking for opportunities to gain experience and exposure in interior design-even before officially beginning the program.
I’ve always naturally had a passion and eye for design; we all have gifts. But managing my Esthetics business truly strengthened and refined me, equipping me even more for my journey in interior design.
