We recently connected with Aida Alonso Iglesias and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Aida, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started writing songs when I was a child. No one in my family had any musical background and the closest was my dad, who was a professional graphic artist for a few years before switching it for a day job to be able to raise my brother and me. I remember playing with my best friend pretending to be musicians and recording my first song when I was 12 or 13, in a karaoke cassette machine I had as a toy. At 14, I discover hip hop culture, and recorded my first rap song, that became viral after of friend of mine uploaded to the internet. In my hometown Vigo, Spain, hip hop wasn’t known and I was one of the first rappers. Being 14 and a female was shocking for people at the time, that was what set me apart and what allowed me to start a professional career in music.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I often envy those who grow up in environments with access to music education. In my case, no one in my family knew or value music and music education is the only type of higher education that is not free in Spain. I wish I had access to that knowledge earlier in life, that would’ve impacted my craft in a positive way.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
