We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Aico Simon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Aico , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
There was a time in my life during which I was struggling to pay rent and just basically survive. During this period, both my digital keyboard and my computer broke. I was devastated that I was unable to make music or perform. News of my misfortune made its way to my supporters; the people who attended all my performances. These kind and generous people offered to purchase a digital keyboard and a microphone for me. They told me not to ever give up on my dreams and passion. Every time I see the equipment, I think of them and how lucky I was to have such kind help. Because of their support, I am here today to pursue my passion.
Aico , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Japanese singer-songwriter, performer, and vocal producer based in Southern California who has tremendous passion for Latin music. I have collaborated with many artists and performed nationally and internationally at various music festivals and events. I discovered my passion for Latin music when I was in Japan and heard the music featured in the documentary film; “Buena Vista Social Club”. I came to the United States to pursue a career in music. I am one of the few Asian women performing in this genre. In 2012, I formed an association with the Latin Grammy nominated salsa band that led me to take over the role of lead vocalist. In 2019, After leaving that band, I became an independent singer songwriter. That same year, I released my first single “Habana”.
I believe that Latin rhythms have a special quality that instantly connect people across borders, regardless of gender or age. I use music to manifest joy and happiness. Anyone listening to my music will feel connected to the love that we all share.
I compose original music as well as offering vocal lessons. I can supervise and engineer studio recordings. I am also familiar with all of the technical aspects involved in mixing both studio and live performances. I enjoy collaborating with various artists to share different ideas and musical views. One of my most recent collaborations was with Willy Calderon; a true musical pioneer who has integrated Japanese city pop music with salsa. I was honored to be the vocalist in his “Project Neon” album.
As a Japanese native, I feel very lucky to be able to express myself in a musical genre that is so far from my cultural origins. It is exciting to me to add a different flavor to a musical project. This synthesis of styles and musical sensibilities helps to eliminate cultural barriers.
Music is one of the most powerful tools to connect people all over the world. I have personally seen this happen many times. Without even being aware, people come together to enjoy their shared humanity. It makes me smile and fills me with joy whenever that miracle occurs. I am very fortunate to be able to pursue my passion and to continue to sing and create music.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I wanted to better develop a way to describe my artistic expression. I know how I wanted it to sound but I was not sure how to describe my vision to other artists and engineers. I decided to go back to school to study all aspects of music theory, production, and performance. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. I now have a much greater capacity to communicate my ideas; both musically and technically.
I also took the time to focus on the creative aspects of musical expression. As someone who was primarily a performer; this was something that I had not previously imagined myself doing. I had been focusing on the technical skills involved in vocal performance. I started to practice meditation to quiet my mind. This mental peace opened my mind; causing me to receive wonderful inspiration. Suddenly, melodies appeared in my mind. The inspiration was so strong that I needed it to get it out of my mind. The result was my first song “Habana”. A new chorus line came to me for the first time and it was so good that I decided to write a song; something I had never done before. It took me 2 years to complete the song. During the process, I had the help and support of many great musical friends. They connected with me and taught me how to arrange and record the song I had written.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to act as a messenger. Music for me is the method of communication that I use to express love for everyone. I draw my inspiration from the infinite love that connects all people. My purpose in writing and performing my music is to remind people of the common bonds that we all have and the love that is available for all of us. My greatest hope is that people will feel the joy that I inspire with my music. This will lead them to recognize the beauty that is found in the recognition of our shared humanity.
