Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ahoo Sarab. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ahoo, appreciate you joining us today. How’s you first get into your field – what was your first job in this field?
I started practicing yoga towards the end of my high school years. It wasn’t something I talked about with anyone, I simply showed up every day in my living room and took a class, from my television. I started joining studios in my mid-20’s, and my practice expanded and became more advanced. At age 29, my life changed and I moved to Kazakhstan, with my new husband, for his career. I lost access to my yoga studios, so went back to practicing at home each day. I made two friends in Kazakshtan, who also practiced yoga. They asked if I could lead them in classes, knowing I had a daily practice. I agreed. My first few classes, taught in my living room, were terrible. I would quit halfway through the class. I always felt insecure and often felt a bit ridiculous. But they kept encouraging me to continue with it. I ended up joining a year long yoga training program, which taught me better ways to teach. And I continued teaching expats in each country I lived in, for a decade.

Ahoo, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have owned yoga studios in Georgia for over 11 years now. I started practicing yoga, when I was in high school, and it’s been 35 years. At both studios, we mainly provide hot yoga. One of them we are Bikram only and the other one we have hot Vinyasa and a few Yin classes. I also run a juice and smoothie bar, where I designed and created healthy drinks to complement a yogic and wellness lifestyle. This has been a huge hit with our community, to be able to have fresh and nutritional drinks after practice. Our yoga community, at both studios, is what sets us apart. We have students who have been coming to us from day one. We are a big family. And we cultivate a community of everyone feeling welcome, through connectivity and love.

How’d you meet your business partner?
I met my business partner, Cleve, when we were both in our early-20’s. He is the lead singer of his band. And my good friend started dating his drummer. They dated for a short time, but I continued to know them throughout the years, because where we lived in Atlanta was pretty small and most people knew each other. It wasn’t until I came back from being away for 15 years, that he and I reconnected. I hired him to sub classes at my other studio, and eventually we bought our studio together. That was 9 years ago and we continue to be great business partners and friends, to this day. He’s still close friends with his original drummer, too.

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Yes, I would. I would have added more to my specialty. Getting a degree in sports medicine or physical therapy, so I could work more closely with the body, in a direct healing way. I love the field I work in. I get to be in the community, helping and healing students, and making a profound impact on their overall wellbeing. I believe the work I do is valuable and being of service is very fulfilling work for me.
