We recently connected with Ahlyia Ralston and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ahlyia, thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Taking a risk in crocheting as a fiber artist and starting a small business has been a journey fueled by passion and determination. Embracing the uncertainty, I dove headfirst into turning my love for crocheting into a viable business venture. Despite the challenges and doubts along the way, I saw every setback as an opportunity to learn and grow. With each stitch, I not only crafted beautiful pieces but also built resilience and tenacity. This risk-taking mindset has propelled me forward, allowing me to carve my own path in the world of fiber artistry and entrepreneurship.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Ahlyia Ralston, a 26-year-old small business owner from Oklahoma. Growing up, I was fortunate to learn the art of crochet from my grandmother at a tender age, igniting a passion that would shape my future endeavors. With every stitch she taught me, I not only inherited a cherished skill but also a profound appreciation for the craft’s heritage and tradition. Armed with these fundamentals, I embarked on a journey to turn my love for crochet into a thriving business, complemented by my creations in western jewelry and outerwear.
What sets my business apart is the essence of uniqueness infused into every piece. Each creation is a labor of love, meticulously crafted by hand, ensuring that no two items are ever alike. This commitment to individuality offers customers a one-of-a-kind experience, where every purchase is a tangible reflection of their distinct style and personality.
Launching this venture was a defining moment for me, as I typically shy away from risks without a clear roadmap. However, the prospect of sharing my creations with the world and connecting with like-minded individuals propelled me forward. I take immense pride in knowing that each piece I create not only bears my craftsmanship but also carries a piece of my heart.
Above all, I strive to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for my customers, where they feel like an extension of my own family. Infusing warmth and personality into my work, I aim to evoke a sense of belonging and comfort, inviting customers to become part of my creative journey. Ultimately, my goal is to spread joy and inspire others through the artistry of crochet and the beauty of handmade creations.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
As a creative entrepreneur, it’s often challenging to convey to non-creatives the true value of the time, effort, and pricing that goes into crafting each piece. Every project I undertake involves meticulous attention to detail, countless hours of work, and a keen eye for quality materials.
When determining pricing, I must factor in not only the cost of materials such as yarn, stuffing, and accessories but also allocate a fair wage for the time spent on each project. I adhere to a standard of at least minimum wage, ensuring that every second devoted to crafting is accounted for. This isn’t about trying to break anyone’s bank; it’s about recognizing and honoring the worth of my time and expertise.
While I acknowledge that not everyone outside the creative community may fully grasp the intricacies involved, I believe it’s essential to communicate the value of handmade goods. Each piece is a labor of love, a culmination of skill, passion, and dedication. And while some may not understand the pricing structure, that’s perfectly okay. What matters most is the connection and appreciation shared between creator and customer, bridging the gap between the tangible product and its intangible essence.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The impact of even the smallest act of kindness cannot be overstated when it comes to supporting small businesses and fellow creatives. Whether it’s purchasing a piece of art or craft, sharing a social media post, or simply spreading the word about our work, every gesture holds immense value.
These acts of kindness go beyond mere transactions; they symbolize a collective effort to uplift and empower the creative community. By supporting artists and creatives, we contribute to the cultivation of a thriving ecosystem where creativity flourishes and innovation thrives.
Moreover, these gestures create a ripple effect, inspiring others to engage with and support local businesses and artisans. It fosters a sense of connection and camaraderie, strengthening the bonds within the creative community.
In essence, it’s not just about buying a product; it’s about investing in a shared vision of a world where creativity is celebrated and cherished. Together, through our collective acts of kindness, we can create a brighter future for artists, creatives, and the creative ecosystem as a whole.
