We recently connected with Agata Uminska and have shared our conversation below.
Agata, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think to be successful we should build a growth mindset and set up attainable goals to achieve. Important thing is to believe that our efforts matter. The place where I am now is a perfect example that with hard work and a strong mindset we can make our dreams come true.
That wasn’t an easy path but when things got tough, I tried to look for ways to improve my skills and keep working toward success.
If it wasn’t for that I would not be an architect in New York City.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Since I remembered I have been interested in art and wanted to develop my creativity. I chose to continue an activity I like and have studied architecture and history of art back in Warsaw, Poland. Since the last years of my studies I have been an active architect and designer. I have got many years of experience as a retail designer, creating concepts for local and international brands. In the past I was able to design stores around Europe, in places such as Poland, Slovakia and Romania or Estonia. I have been working in a few big architecture offices back in Warsaw which specialize in business or hotel buildings. During my journey with “Tremend” studio we designed the Royal Tulip Warsaw Apartment, Crown Plaza Budapest in Hungary and Metropolitan railway station in Lublin, Poland.
After a few years of different collaborations with international clients and investors, the time has come to try to apply for the position of a designer abroad. It becomes more and more realistic. It wasn’t an easy period although it was worth it.
I got a job offer for an architect position from retail design studio “Kenneth Park Architects” in one of their offices in New York City.
I knew, it was just the beginning and I was right.
We are working for the most luxurious brands. One of them is “Veronica Beard”. Each of these spaces are very unique and let us create specific character and style of the brand. Few very recent spaces we designed and opened are in Marin, Charleston and Charlotte.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, I would like to keep challenging myself and despite being successful in the New York City designing world, I don’t forget about my biggest passion which is pottery. For some time I was an active member of a pottery studio in Brooklyn. It helps me to keep a perfect balance in my life and the busy city where I am living now.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think witnessing my own growth as an artist and designer is one of the most rewarding parts of it! It’s a challenging learning process that continues for the whole career if not longer.
