Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Against The Sun. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Against The Sun, thanks for joining us today. What’s the best or worst investment you’ve made (either in terms of time or money)? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
This year’s releases are really special to us because it’s the first time we’ve done all the recording ourselves. We’ve always recorded guitars and bass on our own, but we worked with a close friend to get a professional drum recording studio setup in a living room, and the drums are the best they’ve ever sounded in our music. Our singer Brad also stepped up to the plate to bring all vocal recording and producing in house. We’ve grown as musicians, not only in songwriting, but also on the production side of things. It feels really rewarding to have complete control over the project throughout the recording process.

Against The Sun, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Against The Sun is an Orange County Hard Rock/Metalcore band of four friends who love to make heavy but melodic and meaningful music. We blend Metal inspired instrumentals with the vocals you’d hear in more mainstream music, wrapped together with harsh honest lyrics. We try to craft every song for the greatest emotional impact and we’re really honored that some people continue to enjoy what we write.
Last year, the release of our EP ‘Truth’s Wake’ generated over 170,000 streams, growing our fanbase to the biggest its ever been. We’ve been lucky enough to open for touring acts such as Adema, Inimical Drive, and VRSTY, along with playing at festivals such as Knotfest and Anime Los Angeles.
Now, we’re looking forward to the release of our follow-up EP ‘Silhouette’ in October. So far, the response to the singles has been fantastic. We really leveled up our production game in the past year, along with collaborating with some other amazing artists in the Southern California scene.
Our second single of the year, ‘JAD’ featured Seth Perez from the amazing Hard Rock LA band Chasing Desolation. We’ve played tons of shows with those guys and we couldn’t be happier to have Seth on this track. Next, we collaborated with Shelby Muniz from Alt Pop band Hoity-Toity on our single ‘Happy.’ She sings like a pop star from the top of the charts, and it was so cool to have her voice on our ballad for the year. Finally, we had the badass Tiaday from LA Pop Metal act The World Over sing and scream on our final single of the year ‘Icarus.’ Tiaday’s vocals bring a level of intensity and ferocity to the track that make it our heaviest we’ve ever done.
We’ve been so fortunate that people have enjoyed our music enough to share this journey with us, and we can’t wait till everyone can hear this new EP in full.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being in a band for us is when people emotionally connect to our music. We don’t shy away from talking about dark and personal subjects because music is an outlet for us. We write about heartbreak, politics, mental illness, and even existential literature. We also read every comment and message we get and try to connect with our fans on a personal level. Hearing how our songs have gotten people through really rough times in their lives and that it inspired them to get through it is seriously one of the most rewarding feelings of all time. When someone put our lyrics as their Instagram bio, or when they tell us they picked up an instrument and became an artist because of our music, it fills us with so much love and appreciation for all our fans.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
It’s really all about being a part of a community and giving back! We always show up to see the first band on the bill and we stay the whole time to support every band we play with. We jam their music, follow them on social media, share their releases, and buy merch when we can. We have a whole community of Southern California artists that we continue to support each other through. No one cares about your endeavor if you’re just in it for yourself. But if you’re stoked about other people’s art as much as you want others to be stoked about yours, that love you pour into others will be paid back tenfold.
