We recently connected with Aemilia Kemp and have shared our conversation below.
Aemilia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
The wedding industry often gravitates toward a traditional and familiar aesthetic—a style that many planners follow to create what is considered a “classic” wedding. While every wedding has elements that are unique to the couple, the underlying blueprint remains consistent: soft white flowers, delicate details, and an abundance of light, airy design choices. Cursive script place cards, pastel tones, and ethereal décor have become synonymous with the idea of a wedding.
But for someone who has always loved all things bold, dark, and moody, that formula felt limiting. I craved something more—something that could go beyond the expected and make a powerful, lasting impression. My design style is rooted in the unconventional, embracing the beauty of the unexpected. Whether it’s through dramatic color palettes, striking textures, or unexpected details that tell a story, I am passionate about creating weddings that break the mold.
For me, a wedding should feel as unique as the couple it’s celebrating, not just a replica of trends or traditions. I thrive on finding ways to infuse personality and originality into every detail.
Aemilia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Growing up, I was absolutely obsessed with weddings—but not in the way most little girls daydream about their future big day. My fascination ran deeper. I didn’t just want to be the bride; I wanted to create the magic. I spent countless afternoons throwing elaborate “weddings” for my stuffed animals, complete with thoughtfully designed tablescapes, hand-crafted invitations, and even meticulously curated guest lists. At the time, it never occurred to me that I could turn this passion into a career. It felt as far-fetched as becoming a pop star or a princess—just a whimsical dream.
That all changed when, at 19 years old, I got my first job in the wedding industry working at a venue in Dallas. It was there that I had my lightbulb moment: this was what I was meant to do. Over the years, I worked for other wedding professionals, gaining invaluable experience and learning everything I could about the industry. Each wedding, each client, and each challenge taught me lessons that shaped my skills and sharpened my vision.
Fast forward to this past spring, and I found myself standing at a career crossroads. I realized it was finally time to take the leap and build something of my own. And just like that, Colorado Event Collective was born. In just a little over six months, my dream has grown beyond anything I could have imagined. What started as a modest goal of doing one or two weddings a year has exploded into 19 weddings on the books, along with the addition of a thriving rental business.
Not even in my wildest dreams could I have predicted this journey. But looking back, I realize it all started with those “weddings” for my stuffed animals and a love for creating unforgettable moments. Now, I get to do that every day—and there’s nothing else I’d rather be doing.

My cofounder/business partner is actually my husband, so this is a long story! We met on Instagram because we had mutual friends, I’m pretty sure I mentioned wanting to own my own wedding planning business on our first date, and here we are!
