We caught up with the brilliant and insightful ADST Music a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, ADST thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I learned music marketing through trial and error and also through losing money when I saw what someone was doing and realized I could do it myself. I applied what I learned in business at Bowie State University in addition to what I learned in Healthcare.
I would say that with each project you learn how to tweak things, no who to contact, develop a workforce of process along with templates that help shorten the time span.
I think it’s just networking and building with people Covid hurt a lot with networking. Not to say that’s per say an obstacle but with music it is about relationship building.
ADST, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am by trade a music producer. I got into PR and Media as a need to help get my music to a broader audience. Many artist in my city saw what I did for myself and thus began ADST Media.
With ADST Media I help artist plan and release their music by getting it to DJs, Radio, Media, and other outlets.
I work with them to develop strategies digitally and also within our city with curating events that provides an opportunity to help grow there fan base.
I think what sets ADST Media differently from others is that I am an artist as well. I understand their need and work from a humanistic stand point and being honest. I understand that things take time and work with each artist to help them achieve their goals. It’s also understanding them and their art. Additionally, I am a fan or each client we take on as I take time to understand their art.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Honestly, if you love and artist find out how to directly support them where they can directly benefit from you. This means if they have a website or Bandcamp where you can purchase their music. If they sell merchandise or other goods find out where and support them with it. This goes into shows as well. This helps supports the artist in recouping the cost of recording or can be used to market to a larger audience. Music is so available that sometimes it’s hard for people zone in on one paticular person through our digital society. So if you see an artist find out how to support them where it makes a difference
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media is tricky what was done back on 2014 doesn’t work always and now platforms understand that the algorithm is what they can use to drive content.
With thar being said it’s all about using your likeness. There is only one YOU. Figure out those atritibutes and combine them with your product/music/show. What people are attracted to with social media is connection. Be honest. Do not do things outside of your personality to bec9me popular.
It’s also trial and error. Study with what works. Pick 3 – 5 things and develop them. So let’s say one day it’s your music. The other could be you displaying your love of a topic, the other could showing your love of a sport. The thing is consistency and having that type of content.
Interacting with others as well helps. That’s what helps.
