We recently connected with Adrienne Strickland and have shared our conversation below.
Adrienne, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
My career began in a small but impactful way–an internship that, unbeknownst to me at the time, would lay the foundation for everything I do today. At 22 in my final year of college it dawned on me….I need experience, I also needed a plan for future career growth. I set my sights on getting an internship and applying to graduate school. My mom had worked in the non profit world and I knew I could seek opportunities in a career that would fulfill my need to help others through a similar career path. This internship led to a full time position in advocacy, which opened the doors to nearly a decade of working with child sexual abuse and adult sexual assault. I was gifted the opportunity to continue my education while working full-time in that position. During that time, I had the privilege of walking alongside some of the most resilient individuals as they navigated the aftermath of trauma.
The work was challenging, but it was also deeply fulfilling. As the Director of Forensic services, I had the responsibility to oversee critical interventions for children in the most vulnerable circumstances. But more than the title, it was the extensive training I received, TF-CBT, the intricate dynamics of child abuse, and substantial training in trauma work, that profoundly shaped me. I learned how to help others heal but also how to grow as a clinician and human being.
What I learned those years has carried me into the work I do today. The resilience of the human spirit is something I witnessed firsthand, and now, in my practice and my efforts to educate future counselors, I strive to create a space where healing is possible. The work in advocacy and non-profit taught me that our impact isn’t limited to the clients we see, it stretches far beyond, touching their families, communities and, futures. And in that, I find my purpose each day.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
With years of experience in both clinical and supervisory roles, I have developed a deep understanding of the complexities of trauma and its impact on mental health. I believe in the resilience of my clients and am dedicated to supporting you every step of the way.
I am not only a dedicated therapist, but also a mother to two little girls. My experience as a parent adds a unique perspective to my work allowing me to empathize with the challenges faced by families in crisis. I have experience working with families, providing support and guidance during times of difficulty.
As a trauma therapist with a passion for helping individuals overcome complex trauma, I bring a blend of expertise, compassion, and a touch of lightheartedness to my sessions. Using EMDR, CBT and trauma focused techniques, I aim to create a safe space where healing feels possible and even a bit empowering. Trauma can lead to heightened anxiety, profound hopelessness, or frequent anger outbursts. Understanding the signs of traumatic distress is crucial for addressing the underlying issues. Astrick specializes in uncovering, processing and healing after trauma, helping navigate the path to Reclaim You.
I understand that embarking on a therapeutic journey can be daunting, but I believe in making the process as approachable and engaging as possible. My goal is to help you reclaim your strength and rediscover joy, even in the face of deep-seated challenges. Healing can be tough but with the right support it can be a journey of self discovery and resilience.
Whats new for us:
I have recently transitioned to taking not only private pay clients, but also accepting many of the major insurance companies allowing for a more accessible practice.
In November, We will also be offering in person sessions near downtown Marietta part time.
I am so excited to branch out and open our doors for more people to get quality therapeutic support.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
While training is undeniably important in providing clinicians with the skills and tools to guide clients through a therapy journey, research consistently shows that the therapeutic alliance (the quality of the relationship between therapist and client) is the most significant predictor of positive outcomes. In fact, studies suggest that the strength of this connection can be more influential than the specific modality or technique used. This is why I focus on being authentic and building connections. I recognize that the therapeutic relationship itself can be a profound agent of change, often more powerful than any intervention I may offer.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Early in my career, I thought my role was to provide concrete guidance and expertise at every turn, If I did the RIGHT intervention or exercise or recommended the perfect book my clients would have the outcomes they needed. But over time, I have realized that therapy is less about “fixing” and more about creating a space where clients can explore their own paths to healing. Don’t get me wrong I love a good solution focused session with concrete skills to integrate into daily life, however unlearning the need to always direct the process has allowed me to trust the therapeutic relationship more and honor the wisdom that client’s bring to their own journeys.
