We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Adrienne Smith. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Adrienne below.
Adrienne, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
In 2018, I took a leap of faith to change up my life entirely. I had been living in Boston, a legal professional working in higher ed. I wasn’t passionate about what I was doing and was looking for a new career that would enable me to work with people one-on-one and have my own business. I was a little stuck though, and wasn’t sure what that new career would be, so to clear my mind and be open to the possibilities I decided to break out of my life for a bit. I quit my job, put my stuff in storage, and spent 16 mos. having this amazing adventure traveling around Italy and New Zealand. I learned how to be more flexible, more resourceful, and to have trust. Once I returned, I trained for a career in sound healing. Now I’m a sound healing practitioner living in Sante Fe, New Mexico (a place I had never even visited!) and I love what I do!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a sound healing practitioner, I use instruments such as tuning forks and singing bowls to help people improve their health and wellness. The sounds allow people to drop into deep states of relaxation, where healing can occur on the physical, emotional and mental layers. I provide one-on-one sessions as well as group events. I also teach workshops where participants learn how to use instruments on themselves and others. Although some participants aspire to practice sound healing professionally, either as a side hustle or “next act” in life, many others are simply curious and looking to incorporate sound healing into their own self-care.
I was drawn this practice because it touches on many of my interests such as music, meditation, science and personal wellness. I am proud of bringing a sense of groundedness and practicality into my work, helping to make this modality accessible to everyone. I have done sessions where someone will bring their skeptical partner, and everyone leaves smiling!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I spent so much time and energy soul-searching to figure out what I wanted post-legal career, I wasn’t quite prepared for all of the blood, sweat and tears that would come once I started my own business in sound healing. I thought deciding that path would be the hardest part! I have had so many positive things happen since day one and there is constant growth, I feel truly supported and grateful. However, that growth has taken consistent effort, visioning, and risk-taking. I had to unlearn the idea that “manifestation” means things happen overnight.

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Definitely! And I don’t mean only sound healing, but also my former career in law, even though at first blush it seems polar opposite from what I do now. My legal career and education provided a whole wealth of skills that I use every day, everything from how to be grounded, how to map out long-term projects, how to hold space for clients, and it’s where I learned to teach.
